Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) May 4, 2007 -- Omvox Telecom Corp announced that two Northeast colleges have taken advantage of a grant program to implement an emergency mass alert system on their campuses at no cost. Marymount Manhattan College in New York and St. Francis Medical Center School of Nursing in New Jersey will each have the Alertify™ mass alerting and notification system up and running within a week. Omvox, a Ft. Lauderdale, Florida based telecom company, is offering their technology to all universities and colleges for free while they weigh decisions on their longer term security plans.
"There is no catch here," said Omvox CEO Michael Self. "We are offering this as a public service. All U.S. colleges and universities will be approved for the grant whether they are large, small, public or private," Self said. "Many of these institutions are scrambling to enhance their student emergency communications systems in the wake of Virginia Tech, but they are being slowed down by budget considerations and politics. What we are saying is, 'Don't let your school go unprotected while you take time to implement a plan. We will put our system in at no charge, so everyone can have peace of mind.'" Self said.
Omvox has a history of offering its expertise in a time of crisis. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the company spent resources to set up a 1-800 number that storm victims could call to touch base with friends and relatives. In addition, Self designed notification systems for the U.S. Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Navy in the 1990s. He created one of the first mass-alert systems in 1989. Self also pointed out that Omvox has been working with schools for the past three years, so this is not new territory for the company.
The Alertify™ system is effective because it can send out emergency messages through SMS (text), email, cell phone, and landline phones simultaneously so the user is sure to receive the important information. When an emergency arises, like a weather alert or school security issue, the school's authorized user simply logs on to a secure Website and sends a recorded and/or text message instantly to those contacts.
Universities that are interested in applying for the AlertifyTM grant program should complete a short application online at http://www.alertify.com or call the company directly at 1-888-98-OMVOX, extension 257.
