Bam Bam Slam, the world's first nonstop, interactive, on-line talent/video game says "no" to advertisers and "yes" to keeping its focus on talent videos for its new on-line social network and on-camera performance game. After months of trying to find a credible on-line talent competition, creator Cliff Schwarz realized that the whole market was laden with advertisements and no real attention was put on the actual contest, "There are enough ads on the Web. Our focus is on creating a great interactive talent game for actors, musicians, comedians... performers of all kinds, that both entertains and inspires artists to become better performers."
One of the challenges in trying to create a website that didn't rely on creating revenue through advertising was finding a format that compelled users to want to keep returning. This led Schwarz to invent a new patent-pending "Slam-style" competition, in which the performers rate each other in small, more intimate matches- 5 players at a time. After advancing six of these rounds, a contestant then wins prize money. Because of this structure, a participant can enter as many videos as they want, as many times as they want.
"This is truly a game in which performers can excel and greatly improve their skills, because the people judging their performances are their peers," Schwarz comments, "Growing up I remember practicing my riffs everyday, trying to get better and better. But in a small town you have no idea if you're good or if your song is good. Bam Bam Slam puts everyone on same ground and from there you can see exactly where you stand. If at first you don't advance many rounds, you can keep making new videos until one really stands out. That's how you improve. Our hope is that performers will learn more from watching themselves than from any other thing they can do."
While Bam Bam Slam caters mainly to performing artists, they also have over 30 other categories you can submit videos into including filmmaking, music-making, and photography as well as non-artsy categories.
