Heartland Rehabilitation Launches Program To Eliminate Obesity In Detroit

Obesity reaches epidemic proportions in Michigan; physical therapy can be key to losing weight.

Detroit, MI (PRWEB) May 14, 2007 -- Heartland Rehabilitation Outpatient Services is launching today its Weight Management and Obesity program in its Detroit-area clinics. The program will develop individualized programs to eliminate pain for patients while they exercise to lose weight. The program also provides patients with a safe and motivational environment in which to exercise and learn about nutrition.

Physical therapy can be the key in the weight loss process for overweight and obese patients, according to Heartland physical therapists. The program is often covered by insurance for those whose health is adversely affected by their weight.

As a result of the Weight Management and Obesity program at Heartland, I lost 40 pounds before having gastric bypass surgery and have lost an additional 60 since. In fact, I have been able to reduce the number of medications I take for diabetes as a result of my weight loss.
The first step in Heartland Rehabilitation's Weight Management and Obesity program is pain management and elimination. Many obese and overweight patients have pain - often due to their weight - that prohibits them from exercising, which means the typical "eat less, exercise more" diet advice doesn't work.

Sara Reeves, physical therapist with Heartland Rehabilitation Outpatient Services, says she has seen this program change lives by giving the overweight patient control over their physical fitness.

"Heartland's groundbreaking Weight Management and Obesity program develops a cardio and strength training program specific to each patient," says Reeves. "Our physical therapists involved in the program are well-versed in nutrition and work with the patients to develop sound eating strategies along with their physical therapy and exercise.

Donna Orben, of Newark, Ohio, was nearly immobilized by her weight before working with Reeves at Heartland Rehabilitation Outpatient Services.

"I was using two canes to get from point A to point B as recently as September," said Orben. "As a result of the Weight Management and Obesity program at Heartland, I lost 40 pounds before having gastric bypass surgery and have lost an additional 60 since. In fact, I have been able to reduce the number of medications I take for diabetes as a result of my weight loss."

Orben credits much more than just weight loss to her experience at Heartland Rehabilitation Outpatient Services.
"Sara taught me so much, and it made all the difference in the world to be motivated by someone who cared about me," says Orben. "I am so excited to be working with Sara again now that I have fully recovered from my surgery. I have a new lease on life thanks to Heartland - I am no longer depressed, I'm walking without a cane, and my husband has even started working out five times a week."
