Kelly Preston and John Travolta to Host Fund-Raising Dinner for New Narconon Rehab Center

New center next step in Preston's ongoing crusade against drugs.

Honolulu, Hawai'i (PRWEB) May 24, 2007 -- Kelly Preston and John Travolta are set to host private benefit dinner on the 24th of May at Stage Restaurant at the Honolulu Design Center for $2,500 a seat, presented by Executive Chef Jon Matsubara. All proceeds will go toward the establishment of the first Narconon residential drug rehabilitation center in Hawai'i, with several more planned across the islands in the coming years. Gospel legend BeBe Winans will perform as well as local talent HAPA, Taimane and the Honolulu Boy Choir.

Narconon Hawai'i has been delivering basic drug education in Hawai'i schools since January 2005. To date, Narconon drug educators have given presentations to more than 23,000 students in 65 schools. Analysis of initial responses from those students have shown positive results--informal surveys show that 89% stated they would never start taking drugs, or were now against drugs as a result of the Narconon presentations.

Ice: Hawaii Crystal Meth Epidemic
Narconon Hawai'i President Myron Thompson says that while the focus currently is to establish the new rehab facility, the drug education activities will continue. "In dealing with the Hawai'i drug problem, drug education and prevention in many ways are just as important as rehabilitation."

Narconon is a non-profit, worldwide drug rehab and education network that now comprises more than 185 centers and drug education organizations in 40 countries. The program's successful method is based on the research of author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard.

Restoration of the new rehab center--located in the Kalaeloa area--began nine weeks ago after a license agreement was signed with the Department of Homelands. The 60 bed facility is expected to open within three months and will be the first residential Narconon rehab center to open on the islands.

A year ago, Preston and Narconon Hawai'i teamed up with other island drug prevention groups to distribute free "parent kits", designed to help parents learn how to more effectively talk to their children about the dangers of drug abuse. The kit, introduced by Lt. Governor James "Duke" Aiona and University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones, includes essential information and simple lesson plans most anyone can follow. As a result of the distribution campaign, which included television public service announcements featuring Preston airing repeatedly on all four local networks, thousands of families requested and received the free kit.

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann proclaimed the week of May 20 - May 27, 2006 "Teaching our Kids the Truth About Drugs Week" to commemorate the launch of the kit distribution on the islands.

Preston says she got introduced to drugs in Honolulu during her high school years and continued abusing drugs until her mid-20s. She credits the Narconon method for helping her to stop taking drugs for good. When Preston saw Edgy Lee's documentary "Ice: Hawaii Crystal Meth Epidemic" more than two years ago, she felt it absolutely necessary to take action.

In talking with parents, she found they would feel far more confident in talking to their kids about drugs if they knew how to do so, inspiring the production of the parent kit.
