Leading Industry Experts Discuss the Impact of GPLv3

Four industry pundits agree that the adoption of GPLv3 will cause minimal changes for the user, while ASPs have no real answers on the effect of this latest draft.
I mean, the practical implications for people who use it are really nil. …This is significantly changed from what it was in the first draft.

Louisville, KY (PRWEB) June 29, 2007 -- Speculation surrounding the General Public License version 3 draft process indicated major changes in the OSS model. Now it appears that the leading open source license would have little impact on most OSS users. During a recent conference call hosted by IT Business Edge regarding GPLv3, four leading industry experts agreed about the surprisingly nominal impact from this license draft.

"From the perspective of the typical end user or organization, there will be no discernible difference between GPL3 and GPL2," stated Bernard Golden, founder and CEO of open source consulting firm Navica and a blogger for CIO.com. "I mean, the practical implications for people who use it are really nil. …This is significantly changed from what it was in the first draft."

For ASPs, this latest draft still leaves many unanswered questions. Matt Asay, vice president for Alfresco and a leading open source blogger now contributing to CNET, is concerned with the free ride some companies are taking on OSS and suggests the importance of addressing this problem.

"I think the Googles of the world would love to keep getting free software, and maybe they should, maybe no harm is done, but I do think, why can't they grow, and either contribute cash back, or code back?" says Asay. "That tends to be the real choice facing these companies, or it would be if there was some way of closing this loophole."

Joining Golden and Asay for the GPLv3 discussion were Rob Enderle, principal of the Enderle Group and IT Business Edge blogger, and Chris Maresca, founder and senior partner of the Olliance Group, a leading open source business consultancy.
