Saturday's SCCA Road Rally Benefits Parkinson's Resources of Oregon
Time-Speed-Distance event at Portland International Raceway
is backed by Fluge Global Adventures.
Portland, OR (PRWEB) June 30, 2007 -- The Rally Against Parkinson's presented by Fluge Global Adventures gets underway Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Portland International Raceway. The time-speed-distance (TSD) road rally is not a racing event, but a low-key, fun activity that allows contestants to drive at Portland International Raceway (PIR) and in the surrounding countryside.
"The format is fun and low-key; just a simple country drive, and there are no difficult route-following rules to follow," said Rallymaster Bruce Tabor. "No traps and no tricks, just a fun drive for a good cause." A representative from Parkinson's Resources of Oregon (PRO) will be on hand on for the rally, and additional donations will be accepted.
A Road Rally is a precision contest of driver and navigator skills held within the legal posted speed limits on country roads and highways. Competitors are required to obey all normal rules of the road.
A Rally Team consists of a driver, a co-driver (navigator) and a street-legal car. Rally teams leave the starting line at one-minute intervals and must carefully navigate the route to arrive at the checkpoints on course and on time.
"There are a variety of classes based on experience level, and beginners are always welcome," Tabor explained.
The first part of the competition is called a regularity run. The goal of a regulatory run is not to travel around the track as fast as possible. In fact, a speed limit and no-passing rules are enforced. The goal is to drive as precisely around PIR as possible, and each team will be timed.
After a few hours of driving around the countryside in some very nice scenery, contestants return to the track for a second regularity run. The goal of the second trip around PIR is to exactly match the first logged time.
"Some people use music to keep on pace; some people set the cruise control for 35 mph; some people use stopwatches and landmarks. We'll have a special prize for the team that gets the lowest score for the combined regularity runs," Tabor added.
Following the rally is the Oregon Region Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) All Club Party, sponsored by the Pro Drive Racing School. Everyone who competes in or works in the Rally Against Parkinson's presented by Fluge Global Adventures is admitted to the catered All Club Party for free.
Registration at Portland International Raceway is at 10:30 am with an entry fee of $30 for SCCA and Oregon Rally Group members, $35 for non-members. Further information is available at www.oregonrally.com

About Oregon Region SCCA
The Oregon Region of the SCCA was established in the 1960's and has grown to its present membership of over 1,200 members. The Region obtained its charter from SCCA in 1962. It is a member oriented, member operated club with the primary purpose of "promoting, maintaining and improving automobile sports and interest in the ownership, operation of, and safety of sports cars."
The roots of SCCA and Oregon Region run deep in racing history. The origin of SCCA can be traced back to the pre-World War II "Auto Racing Club of America" which disbanded because of World War II. Originally, the State of Oregon was included in the territory of Northwest Region, SCCA (NWR), and it remained that way until the official creation of Oregon Region in 1962.
From its beginning, Oregon Region SCCA has been organizing and administering sports car/club racing events at Newport, Goshen (South of Eugene) and Portland's West Delta Park (now Portland International Raceway - PIR). The Region's first race was held at the Newport municipal airport (an ex-WWII air base) in 1962.
