Is Your Job in Jeopardy? Be Alert to "Fire Alarms" that Might Mean a Case of 'Employment-Interruptus'

Subtle clues often precede terminations says on line recruiter WallStJobs.com.

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 11, 2007 -- Firms often use the slower summer months to review their human capital needs and make decisions regarding staff tenure. "In almost all cases, there are clues that observant employees can pick up on in advance of losing their jobs," noted Robert Graber, founder of WallStJobs.com.

This distancing may not only be a case of avoiding proximity, but it can be as low-key as the sudden use of an iPod to ignore you in an elevator or failure to be included in an office pool or social event. Be particularly alert to having to leave messages with an assistant when you were usually put directly through.
Graber listed some of the typical job related changes that might be precursors of the dreaded, "pink slip":

-a marked decrease in the amount of work and special projects assigned to you
-a shift in task responsibilities
-new staff additions that are not replacements
and what Graber feels is the most telling,
-a sudden decrease in access to management.

"When an employee is targeted for release, it is human nature for those in the know to distance themselves," said Graber. "This distancing may not only be a case of avoiding proximity, but it can be as low-key as the sudden use of an iPod to ignore you in an elevator or failure to be included in an office pool or social event. Be particularly alert to having to leave messages with an assistant when you were usually put directly through."

Graber cautioned that noting just one or two of these, "Fire Alarms" may not be conclusive, but if you detect several signals, you might be wise to take steps to protect yourself by confronting management or at the very least, making certain that your resume is up to date.
