Boca Raton Healthcare Firm Changing America: Father and Son Physicians Join MDVIP

Boca Raton doctors are the first father and son team to become part of MDVIP, Inc., a national leader in what the firm calls "personalized preventive health care" -- and from its Boca Raton birth, MDVIP is changing the way Americans look at and receive that care. What's MDVIP?

Boca Raton, Fl (PRWEB) July 16, 2007 -- The 1970's television show All in the Family changed the American television landscape.M

Metzger Comprehensive Care doctors Charles E. Metzger, Sr., MD, and Charles E. Metzger, Jr., MD, are keeping it all in the family as well, and are also helping to change something -- the American health care landscape.

It's more and better time with the patient.
The Boca Raton doctors are the first father and son team to become part of MDVIP, Inc., a national leader in what the firm calls "personalized preventive health care " -- and from its Boca Raton birth, MDVIP is changing the way Americans look at and receive that care.

What's MDVIP?

According to company spokesperson Nancy Udell, MDVIP is "a national network of physicians who practice proactive, preventive and personalized healthcare , detection and treatment of disease."

"MDVIP-affiliated physicians reduce the practice to no more than 600 patients in order to focus on prevention and wellness, not just the treatment of illness once a patient gets sick," she said.

In return for providing more time and a more personalized service, the doctors receive a flat fee of $1,500 each year from each patient - and among other things that are provided, perhaps the most highly prized among MDVIP services are same or next day appointments that start on time and last as long as needed, and physician availability 24/7, according to Udell.

In turn, the MDVIP approach results in dramatic "hospitalization reduction rates," according to Tommy Thompson, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and chairman of MDVIP's Committee on Cost Reduction Through Preventive Care.

"The MDVIP care model puts the emphasis on keeping the patient well, and their dramatic hospitalization reduction rates are proof of that," said Thompson. This is the way we should be practicing medicine. It's the way the patient wants it, the way the doctor wants it, and that's the way the system should work."

MDVIP currently serves more than 53,000 patients through over 150 affiliated physicians located in 17 states and Washington, D.C. "More And Better"

For Dr. Metzger, Jr., following in his father's footsteps as Chief of Medicine at Boca Raton Community Hospital is complicated enough - while choosing the MDVIP approach to his profession is the proverbial no-brainer.

"It's the right way to practice medicine," he told The Boca Raton News. "It's more and better time with the patient."

Dr. Metzger senior, now 73, has seen the coming and going of numerous methodologies, approaches and practices over a nearly 40-year career - and he believes the MDVIP approach "makes sense."

In his former practice, maintaining a practice size of 2,500 patients or more, made it "nearly impossible to focus on the individualized needs of each patient."

"With the MDVIP model," he said, "I finally have the time to practice my profession the way I always envisioned it. I have time to listen, time to examine and the time to take the best care of my patients so that I can provide more personalized, quality preventive care."

On a day-to-day basis said Dr. Metzger Jr., said his patient load is now 8-10 - a dramatic drop from his former 20-30 patient workload per day.

Dr. Metzger Jr. added that the MDVIP approach also permits a much more thorough physical exam, including such things as looking for sleep or dementia issues - "or depression, a hugely undiagnosed thing, and something you don't have time for in a traditional physician's role."

Another "really neat part," he added, "is a nutritional survey. What do people currently do, and how can we make that better." Prevention

"One of the main reasons I chose to affiliate with MDVIP was because they are a very results-driven company with an exceptional 90 percent satisfaction rate and a 95 percent renewal rate," said Dr. Metzger, Jr.

Is MDVIP what's come to be known as so-called "concierge medicine?"

MDVIP is beyond concierge healthcare, according to Dr. Metgzer, Sr.. And what places it beyond being simply a flat fee service is the MDVIP concern for prevention.

According to the MDVIP website, "preventing little things from becoming big things helps keep you enjoying life and staying well."

The role of prevention is revealed by MDVIP patients being admitted to the hospital at dramatically lower rates than non-MDVIP patients. Reductions in hospitalizations for MDVIP patients are up to 65 percent for Medicare beneficiaries and up to 80 percent for those with commercial insurance, said Udell.

"We were on a treadmill before," said Dr. Metzger, Jr.
