Physically Handicapped Actors and Musical Artists League's Production of "Urinetown, The Musical" Opens July 27 in Denver, Colorado

Physically Handicapped Actors and Musical Artists League (PHAMALY) is not only unique to Colorado but nationally as the only company comprised of actors with varying disabilities that presents a full production of a commercial musical every year. This year's production of "Urinetown, The Musical" opens July 27 and runs through August 19 in the Space Theatre at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) July 14, 2007 -- Tickets are now on sale for the Physically Handicapped Actors and Musical Artists League's production of "Urinetown, The Musical". The show opens July 27 and runs through August 19 in the Space Theatre at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

Tickets are $28 and can be purchased by calling Denver Center Ticketing at 303-893-4100; online at www.phamaly.org; at Tickets West outlets in all regional King Soopers stores; or at the Denver Center Ticket Office, located at the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Groups purchasing ten or more tickets receive a discount and should call 303-778-7724. Students, seniors and PHAMALY members can purchase tickets for just $24 through the box office.

The recent proliferation of Colorado
"Urinetown" begins with a friendly welcome from our narrator, Officer Lockstock. Officer Lockstock and the adorable moppet Little Sally fill us in on the back story. As the result of a terrible water shortage, private toilets have become unthinkable and all restroom activities are handled through a private corporation! This hilarious comedy features a satirical look at the corporate world, incorporating sight gags and parodies of musical theatre conventions in general and Les Miserables in particular and jokes that poke fun at the show itself.

"The recent proliferation of Colorado "Urinetown" productions speaks directly to the incredible quality of this hilarious script and engaging music. It is our hope in realizing the PHAMALY version of the show to deliver a new and powerful rendering of this amazing musical," said director Steve Wilson. "In addition to our unique ambulatory skills, we will dazzle with a spectacular setting, find political resonance in a sightless look at the underbelly of corporate America and discover myriad modes of restroom relief. Follow us to a funny; foreboding future filled with ...symbolism - where public bathrooms are controlled by private business, and where it has now become a privilege to pee!

"Urinetown, The Musical" was produced on Broadway in September, 2001 by the Araca Group and Dodger Theatricals in association with TheatreDreams, Inc. and Lauren Mitchell. It ran on Broadway through January 18, 2004, closing with a total of 25 previews and 965 performances. In 2002, the musical was nominated for a whopping nine Tony Awards© winning three for Best Director, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.

PHAMALy's mission is to enable persons with disabilities to showcase their talents and abilities through live productions and to make the performing arts more accessible to everyone.

  • As a not-for-profit membership organization, PHAMALY is dedicated to producing traditional theater in nontraditional ways.
  • Year after year, our professionally produced shows continue to reaffirm that dedication.
  • We strive to empower our actors as they acquire and improve their acting skills.
  • We educate theater professionals in methods of adapting their own productions to the needs of people with disabilities.
  • We develop, discover, and incorporate assistive technologies to improve the experience for actors and audiences alike.

Each actor is physically or developmentally challenged, some are blind, others hearing-impaired and several are in wheelchairs. Their disabilities include Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson's and others. But audiences will be focused on the actors' talent, not their disabilities.

PHAMALY is not only unique to Colorado but nationally as the only company comprised of actors with varying disabilities that presents a full production of a commercial musical every year.

In its 18-year existence, PHAMALY has gained national recognition and received numerous honors including the Mayor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. In 2006 the company was honored with two Denver Post Ovation Awards and received National recognition with a profile of "The Wiz" on PBS's The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. The company's inspirational 2005 production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" was named Best Musical of 2005 by The Denver Post; one of the top ten productions of 2005 by the Rocky Mountain News and Best Overall Production of 2005 by the Daily Camera.

Performances of "Urinetown" run Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. An additional performance will be held on Monday, August 13 at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday, August 5 performance will be audio-described for low-vision and blind patrons and sign language interpreted for deaf audience members. The Sunday, August 19 show will also be audio-described. There will be talk-backs with the cast following the performances on Friday, August 3, 10 and 17. Not recommended for children under the age of 6.
