The votes for the ten most popular places to retire in America have been tallied at www.Topretirements.com.
Madison CT - August 15 - The votes for the ten most popular places to retire in America have been tallied at www.Topretirements.com. The winners come from states ranging from Florida to Nova Scotia and Connecticut to Arizona. Some of the choices are a bit surprising.
John Brady, President of Topretirements announced the winning towns today. "This was an unannounced, online popularity contest among site visitors to "Topretirements - Find Your Perfect Retirement Community". Every time a visitor viewed a town's review page; that counted as a vote. Those with the most online visits were assumed to be the most popular retirement towns - the ones active adults are most interested in learning about." Visits were tallied between January 1 and August 1, 2007.
Top 10 Most Popular Communities
1. Asheville, NC
2. Paris, TN
3. Old Saybrook, CT
4. Oxford, OH
5. Sarasota, FL
6. Halifax, Nova Scotia
7. Prescott, AZ
8. Green Valley, AZ
9. Athens, GA
10. Winston-Salem, NC
North Carolina and Arizona each had 2 towns in the Top 10. Most on the list were Sunbelt towns that are relatively small. Perhaps the most surprising choices were: the small college town of Oxford, Ohio; the historic coastal town of Old Saybrook, CT; and the northernmost choice - Halifax, Nova Scotia. Communities which almost made it to the top 10 list were Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; and Beaufort, North Carolina.
Brady commented on the results: "This study measures baby boomers' incoming perceptions more than anything else. They hear good things about Asheville and the other towns, so they want to find out more about them", he continued. That's good news for towns with an existing buzz, but bad news for towns that are trying to become retirement destinations. They are going to have to work harder to get noticed.
