Los Angeles Organizations, Corporations, and Media Team Up For National Disaster Preparedness Month

Students of Antioch University's Applied Community Psychology Specialization will host and produce an event designed to educate local families about the importance of practical safety measures and being prepared in case of an emergency

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) August 29, 2007 -- In conjunction with the month-long, national initiative for disaster preparedness, and in the wake of events such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, the students and ambassadors of the Applied Community Psychology Specialization of Antioch University Los Angeles, along with the Community Partnership Speakers Bureau, have conceptualized the Community Safety Fair: Partners in Preparedness event that will take place on September 15, 2007 on the AULA campus in Culver City from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The overriding goal of the Fair is for people to leave better prepared in the event of an emergency. This will include teaching attendees the importance of every day safety measures, prevention techniques, and large scale emergency plans
The event will feature a myriad of skills-based workshops including Adult CPR/AED, Child and Infant CPR, First Aid, Internet Safety for Children and Teens, Child Safety and Child Proofing Your Home, Fire and Home Safety, Assisting Seniors and People with Disabilities, Creating a Family Safety Plan, and Pet Safety, to name a few. Event-goers of all ages will have the opportunity to learn practical safety measures through these educational workshops during thirty to forty-five minute sessions throughout the day.

This will include teaching attendees the importance of every day safety measures, prevention techniques, and large scale emergency plans," added Dr. Sylvie Taylor, Director of the Applied Community Psychology Department.

In addition to the workshops, entertainment by L.A. based acoustic pop band, Imaginary Friends, will take place from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Victory over Violence, a youth-sponsored initiative to help young people identify and counteract the root causes of violence in their lives and in their communities, will provide face painting throughout the day for children.

To date, sponsors and partners for the Community Safety Fair include The Community Partnership Speaker's Bureau, Antioch University Los Angeles, ABC7 Ready SoCal: Disaster Preparedness, Arden Realty, The American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles, My Very Necessary Medical ID Card™, Hub International, and Culver City C.E.R.T. Special guests will include representatives from the Culver City Mayor's Office, notable Antioch University alumni, and Nancy Davis, author of Lean on Me, director of the RACE to Erase MS, and well-known Hollywood philanthropist.

Admission to the Community Safety Fair is free, and the event is open to the public. Gift bags with safety-related information and materials will be provided to all attendees who complete a safety fair program evaluation. All guests will receive their own My Very Necessary Medical ID Card™, valued at $40/yr per membership. Parking will be provided by Arden Realty, Inc. The Community Partnership Speakers Bureau is a community service sponsored by the Applied Community Psychology Specialization of the Antioch University Los Angeles M.A. Psychology Program.
