"Cancer patients need to use every tool at their disposal to ensure they get the most effective treatment possible," says Timothy Anderson of "Often with certain types of cancers, the first treatment method is the only one attempted, regardless of whether or not it seems to be effective. Sometimes this is because the cancer moves so quickly that there is no time for other treatment options, but other times it is simply because the overall effect of the treatment on the symptoms is not properly tracked."

But what can a patient do to determine how effective the treatment is in the first place? According to Anderson, the key is to record the effect of every treatment event on the cancer symptoms you have and communicate this information to your doctor.

"Doctors only get a snapshot of your situation at various points in time, such as when an x-ray or ultrasound is done, or when a biopsy is performed. What they don't see is the progression day to day of how your symptoms have evolved while you're receiving treatment. This can be crucial information for evaluating the effectiveness of the treatment.

"The first step is to keep a journal of your cancer symptoms. Include dates and times, what symptom occurred and how severe it was. Bring this journal when you visit your doctor. Over time, your memory will fade, however, your journal will provide a chronological, objective history of what happened and when."

But tracking symptoms is not enough. The next step is to track the treatment results. After your doctor recommends a course of treatment, how do you know whether it's working? Anderson insists that a journal is vital in this area as well.

"Keep a regular log of what treatments, procedures and medication you take, when you take it, whether with meals or not, and what the results are. Do you feel better? Worse? Are there any side effects of the medication? When do they occur?

"Maintaining this journal over time is important for you to keep abreast of whether a treatment is having a positive effect or a negative effect on your overall health. Nowadays, there are a number of different treatment options -- including alternative treatments -- available for most types of cancer, and keeping a detailed treatment journal is a great way to ensure you get the best one for you."

According to Anderson, it is vital that every cancer patient take an active role in managing their own health. Using a simple journal approach is the fastest and easiest way to help your doctor help you.
