Mardi Gras, French for "Fat Tuesday," is the day before Ash Wednesday and the final day of Carnival. Carnival begins 12 days after Christmas, on January 6, and ends on Mardi Gras, exactly 46 days before Easter - which falls a week earlier this year.

The most famous Mardi Gras celebration in the United States is in New Orleans and the two-weeklong party draws hundreds of thousands of tourists donned in decorative masks and costume dress for Mardi Gras. People there enjoy this celebration by going to parades where they catch beads, doubloons and trinkets that are all thrown from floats in elaborate parades.
