People researching bariatric weight-loss surgery in their city have a helpful new resource online. Bariatric City is a web-based directory of weight loss surgery information specific to certain cities across the United States. The project was launched this week by the publishers of the Bariatric Learning Center.
According to publisher Brandon Cornett, the directory is meant to perform two key functions at once: "First and foremost, we wanted to build a useful tool for people researching bariatric surgery in their city or state. Secondly, we plan to use the site to connect those same people with qualified surgeons in their area."
The second part of this vision will be made possible through a unique sponsorship program offered through the site. Bariatric surgeons in a particular city can sponsor their city's bariatric information page, thereby increasing their online visibility to the people who matter most -- their prospective patients.
(To view an example of a city page, along with the space reserved for a sponsoring surgeon, you can visit this Dallas, Texas bariatric city page.)
Cornett, who has a background in search engine marketing, explained the importance of online visibility for bariatric surgeons:
"Statistics show that most people looking for a surgeon will start online, using search engines like Google and Yahoo. So a bariatric surgeon with good visibility online has a chance to connect with more people in their area. This is what Bariatric City delivers ... it gives surgeons one more way to be found online."
In fact, Cornett feels so strongly about search engine visibility that his company puts more than 40% of site-generated revenues right back into the website, focusing on such things as online promotion, content development, and traffic generation.
"Basically, we do all the promotional work for the city pages," he explained, "and the surgeons benefit simply by being listed on the page. The more time and effort we put into the website, the more valuable it becomes to the surgeons who are featured on it."
In this context, being "featured" on the website means exactly that. One of the things that make Bariatric City unique is their "one surgeon per city" rule. A surgeon who sponsors a particular city will be the only surgeon who appears on that city's page -- a vastly different approach than typical web-marketing arrangements.
"That way," said Cornett, "the surgeon who cared enough to sponsor a city's page will get all the benefits of that page. They will be the sole sponsor, so their photo and bio will appear right up top, along with a direct link to the surgeon's website."
