Often, these reflections are sobering: In "D.T. Island," the speaker casts a cold eye on the reality and aftermath of alcoholism, painting a disturbing portrait of the disease's ravages in a mere four stanzas of rhyming couplets; "Dear Father Hear Me Praying" finds Farley's speaker examining a troubled world and finding it beyond repair, prompting a desperate beseeching of a higher authority for assistance. But there are lighter moments, too, as in "It's Heavy Metal, It Will Never Die." In it, the speaker encounters a traveler who endorses the artistic merits of that musical genre: "It's heavy metal, it'll make you fly! / This rockin soul music, it will never die!"
