Student attrition rates among traditional and online institutions are on the rise according to recent estimates - as high as 50 percent for traditional students and upwards of 60 percent for online learners. As a result, college and university administrators are searching for new ways to engage and retain students. To address this phenomenon, EducationDynamics, the premier marketing resource for higher education institutions, today announced its first annual National Dialog on Student Retention.

The dialog will begin with an online survey of traditional and online college officials involved in recruiting and retaining full-time and part-time undergraduates and graduates to identify the burning retention issues. The survey results will then be compiled and reviewed by leading higher education administrators in a series of meetings to create a list of priorities that will culminate in a one-day conference on June 3, 2008. Thought leaders in the field of retention will gather at the inaugural event in Atlanta, Georgia to present best practices and common-sense solutions to help institutions improve retention rates.

  • Key considerations when addressing retention rates
  • Technology applications that measure engagement

"Technology is not typically viewed as a retention tool, whereas traditional student services such as counseling, face-to-face interaction and intervention tend to dominate engagement and retention efforts at the post-secondary level," continues Shay. "This conference will introduce and discuss the various emerging technologies that are changing the shape of student communication and positively impacting retention. This is crucial new information, as we now know that students are placing more trust in online information."

EducationDynamics is currently soliciting presentations for the National Dialog on Student Retention conference that address issues surrounding retention in higher education. Special consideration will be given to those proposals that utilize research and the use of contemporary technology and communications shown to positively impact student retention and engagement.
