N. Denise Asher has been recognized by the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego (CASD) as their Outstanding Trial Lawyer of the Year for 2008.

Ms. Asher was recognized for her dedicated work on behalf of injured consumers, including her work in a complex medical malpractice trial that took place in San Diego Superior Court (Reilly v. Powers, San Diego Superior Court GIC 861199). The case involved a doctor whose negligence and failure to timely diagnose a squamous cell carcinoma resulted in the spread of the cancer that eventually became terminal. Through her efforts, Ms. Asher secured a landmark $5.7 million verdict on behalf of her client, which included a loss of consortium award for $3 million. The verdict was later reduced pursuant to MICRA (statute limiting medical malpractice damages) to approximately $1.8 million.

This is the first year that Denise Asher has won the award, which was presented at CASD's Annual Awards and Installation Dinner on February 8, 2008. "The Outstanding Trial Lawyer of the Year Award is the highest honor CASD can bestow on a member," noted Kenneth Sigelman, President of the CASD. "Denise's sensational verdict in the Reilly v. Powers case makes her a richly deserving recipient." Ms. Asher's work in the Reilly case also resulted in her selection as a finalist by Consumer Attorneys of California for the statewide award for consumer attorney of the year.

Asher has recently changed the focus of her practice with an eye towards becoming a full-time mediator. "To be recognized by this great organization is an incredible honor," she said. "I am blessed to be surrounded by such wonderful attorneys, who have been so supportive during my career. As I transition into my new role as a full-time mediator, I look forward to continuing to work together with CASD members and the San Diego bar."
