Physicians Total Care Helps Connecticut Facility Get Started with Physician Medication Dispensing

When Phoenix Internal Medicine Associates wanted point-of-care dispensing in their practices, they looked to Physicians Total Care to help them get their idea off the ground.

When Phoenix Internal Medicine Associates, a Connecticut-based health care facility with two separate locations, first looked into physician medication dispensing, they weren't sure where to start.

"We were quite intrigued by the concept of operating our own dispensary within the confines of our office," said Carole Torello, site manager of Phoenix Internal Medicine Associates. "Having the ability to offer our patients the convenience of receiving their medications while seeing their physicians was a great concept that we were interested in pursuing further."

That's where Physicians Total Care came in. Phoenix Internal Medicine Associates turned to them for their physician medication dispensing software, the PTC9000.

Both the Phoenix locations installed the physician dispensing software in December 2007. Between the two of them, they have seven prescription writers: six physicians and one nurse practitioner.

"The PTC9000 is ideally suited for health clinics of any size, whether you've got one prescribing physician or more than a dozen," said Warren Moseley, president of Physicians Total Care (http://www.physicianstotalcare.com), which is in its 23rd year of operation.

After Phoenix Internal Medicine Associates installed their software, they found insurance issues to be their biggest challenge.

"There are so many variables involved in the insurance process that this became our greatest challenge when trying to fill prescriptions," said Torello. "Many were rejected for one reason or another."

However, the solution was easy. For each insurance problem, Phoenix Internal Medicine Associates recorded the rejection code and card number, and then sent the information to Physicians Total Care to help them resolve the issues. To date, Torello says that the majority of the problems have been taken care of.

"You're not just providing software," Moseley said. "You've also got to provide the customer service. Every software has a learning curve, and it is vital that you're there to help walk your customer through it. You want the software to work for them as much as -- if not more than -- they do."

Torello also said that both Phoenix locations -- and their patients -- were embracing the new system.

"Patients have overwhelmingly embraced this concept and are very excited about using the dispensary," said Torello. "They love the convenience of it most of all, and we are very happy that we can supply them with this new service."
