Affordable Tools in Spanish Help Business Owners, Managers Navigate Confusing Employment Laws, Reduce Legal Risk

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, California has the most Hispanic-owned businesses in the country with 427,678 or 27.2 percent. These firms pull in receipts of more than $57 billion. And Los Angeles County boasts the highest number among counties across the country at 188,472 businesses. In terms of employees, 25.8 percent of all Californians speak Spanish in the home.

California law requires a business that employs workers who are only Spanish speaking to post the minimum wage poster in Spanish. It also requires employers who have even just one employee whose primary language is Spanish to post their Workers' Compensation Notice of Carrier in Spanish.

Compliant employment posters must also include information about the business' workers' compensation benefits, pay day schedule and emergency contacts.

"As the number of Hispanic businesses in California continue to increase, it's vital that Spanish speaking employers and employees understand their rights under the law," said Diana Borroel, President and CEO of the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. "CalBizCentral's Spanish language tool set is exactly what our members need."

"These materials provide easy access to information that all businesses need to train supervisors and manage Spanish speaking employees, and importantly, prevent lawsuits against employers for non-compliance," said Bell.
