Worried daughter. Long-distance son. Overwhelmed senior. Stressed-out caregiver. Helpless friend. Concerned neighbor. That's when a call to a certified geriatric care manager (CMC) can help. Geriatric care management isn't a new specialty. But it remains an untapped resource for seniors. "In 1993, my husband happened to read a news article about care management. Luckily, there was a care manager in our area. She held my hand and led me through the maze of caregiving issues that surrounded me and my father who was paralyzed from prostate cancer," Jackson-Brown says.
In her practice, Jackson-Brown drills clients with the phrase: "Stay ready, so you don't have to get ready," a pro-active stance to aging and caregiving gracefully and wisely." She continues: "With more people living longer, we are already seeing changes in how seniors age and function today. Care management and senior advising take many forms. For example, Jackson-Brown recalls the concern that f two out-of-town daughters had about their 91 year-old mother's driving. Jackson-Brown knew about a driving school that conducted a specially developed behind-the-wheel assessment for seniors. The mother passed the assessment and was provided with recommendations and devices for her car.
Working with a network of service providers -- both medical and non-medical -- Jackson-Brown is a ready referral source for seniors and their families.
