SolarWinds, a leader in network management software, announced today that the Danish municipality of Aalborg relies on Orion and Engineer's Toolset to help maintain record service delivery levels to 19,000 government employees working at 1,200 IT enabled locations via a mixed network stretching across the 1147 km² region.
Over the last few years Aalborg's network and IT infrastructure has grown with the decision to merge neighbouring districts Hals, Nibe, and Sejlflod into an enlarged Aalborg municipality. This merger added 125 locations and another 200km of fibre to the network and the priority now is for the IT department to remain consistent with its added responsibilities. Much of the Aalborg network infrastructure is powered by HP Procurve router and switches, "we have a good relationship with HP and its switches have performed excellently over the years however we were not happy with the HP Network Node Manager software which we felt was expensive and slow - so a few years ago we started looking for a replacement," explains Peter Holmberg Jakobsen, a system engineer with the Aalborg IT department since 1996.
Aalborg approached Draware, a SolarWinds partner, to secure copies of both Orion and Engineer's Toolset. The products allowed them to quickly integrate new locations and assets into their infrastructure while delivering the same level of service to this new larger community. "From early on, we noticed a considerable improvement over Network Node Manager," explains Jakobsen. "Orion has a better interface and delivers vital status information quicker with the ability to easily drill down into technical details to find the root cause of a problem."
The IT department for Aalborg municipality has just 13 staff, yet manages to deliver first and second level help desk, network design, implementation and management in support of 1,200 local government administrative locations such as schools, eldercare, social services, environment, culture, parks, transport and supplies such as gas, electricity and water. The team has a high degree of technical competency and one of the best service delivery records of any Danish municipality which Jakobsen attributes to a combination of factors, "we are a very organised team and SolarWinds helps us in this area, especially tools like the SNMP sweep and the Switch Port Mapper which make tasks like putting in a new backbone router a 10 minute job and as the entire team can access the system, everybody is always up to speed on what is going on."
