Collage Artist Fashions Cinderella Tale: The Vanities Celebrates the Triumph and Beauty of Being Yourself

When a high fashion illustrator turns his eyes and hands from advertising to fairy tales, the result is captivating. Terence Lawlor, whose exquisite collages have been featured internationally on posters, brochures and billboards, spent six years creating the illustrations for The Vanities, a lavish retelling of the Cinderella tale.

Wilmington, DE (PRWEB) March 7, 2008 -- In The Vanities, Terence Lawlor's hip and contemporary version of the Cinderella story, Giselle is a striking young orphan and ultra-talented hair stylist. Since childhood, she has been kept in the shadows by three vain divas of the court. When the ruler announces his retirement and a grand ball, at which the citizen with the best coiffure will be crowned the new ruler, the divas are in a tizzy. Which will win? As they rely on Giselle's talent to do their do's, she quietly creates her own masterpiece. In 62 illustrated pages of rhyming stanzas, with three gatefolds, The Vanities celebrates the triumph and beauty of being yourself rather than one of fashion's victims.

Lawlor's astonishing illustrations for The Vanities are drawing wide attention. Reminiscent of Arcimboldo's composite heads of the Renaissance, Lawlor's richly complex collages bring together disparate snippets of textiles, jewels, fruit, flowers, furniture, and everyday objects to create fantastic characters and landscapes. Fans of fashion--as well as William Wegman's photographs, Walter Wick's I Spy series, and Joost Elffer's playful produce -- will relish Lawlor's visual transformation of the familiar into the fabulous.

After years of creating collages on the tight deadlines of the advertising world, Lawlor began work on The Vanities. "I wanted to do a series of illustrations that all worked together, in a time frame that allowed me to do my best work," he says. Martin Dawber, author of The Big Book of Fashion Illustration, says, "Terence is a consummate wizard of collage conjuring up ingenious compositions fashioned with sophisticated style and elegant wit."
