It's a glorious season to be a homely dog. The Sonoma-Marin Fair is staging its 20th annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest in June 2008 and already dog-owners from across the United States and even Great Britain are inquiring about entering. And their ugly dogs are starting to posture and bare their repulsive teeth, if, of course, they have teeth.

The contest occurs on Friday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m. during the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. Entry forms can be downloaded at http://www.sonoma-marinfair.org or requested by calling 707-283-3247 (FAIR).

The 2008 World Champion will take home $1,000 in prize money along with a trophy and bragging rights. In the past two years, there have been more cameras than contestants at the packed event. Past winners have gone on to charm Jay Leno and appear on the Morning Show, Geraldo, and Inside Edition. Last year's winner, Elwood, a formerly homeless Chinese Crested owned by Karen Quigley of New Jersey, appeared on The View with Barbara Walters and has been called upon to judge local ugly dog contests across the country.

Quigley reports, "Elwood has been enjoying his reign as the 2007 World's Ugliest Dog. Since he was homeless once himself, he has become an ambassador helping other homeless dogs find their forever homes." When asked if he would be returning to stake his claim on the 2008 World title, he replied, very unambassadorlike, "GRRRRR." As any dog knows, those are fighting words.

Prize money of $500 and a trophy will be awarded to the Ugliest Dog of 2008 which qualifies the dog to compete for the World title. Prizes of $100 go to the finalists in the Pedigree and Mutt classes. All dogs must enter a prequalifying round to ensure they are truly ugly before they take the stage.

Contest lovers can cast their vote at the hugely popular World's Ugliest Dog Voting Gallery (http://www.sonoma-marinfair.org) where contestant photos and descriptions will be posted starting this March. Zealous fans have tampered with votes in the past two years, but the Fair hopes to prevent this in 2008.

Attending the World's Ugliest Dog Contest is included in the price of admission to the fair as are the carnival, concerts, and other entertainment. The Sonoma-Marin Fair runs June 18 through 22 and offers $14 admission for adults, $9 for 4 to 12 year olds and under age 4 are free. Look for fair and contest updates online at http://www.sonoma-marinfair.org or call 707-283-3247 (FAIR).
