Intelligent Home Agent Leverages its Location in the Network to Enable New Revenue Opportunities for WiMAX Operators

The Home Agent's strategic position in the mobile wireless network provides a unique opportunity for operators to leverage it beyond the basic Mobile IP and Home Agent functionality available in older generation technologies

WiChorus, provider of the industry's most scalable Intelligent Wireless Core Platforms for WiMAX™ and Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks, today announced the availability of its Home Agent solution. Leveraging the capabilities of WiChorus' Intelligent Wireless Core Platform, the Home Agent solution serves as a key component for emerging Mobile WiMAX™ networks. WiChorus is partnering with leading telecommunications equipment manufacturer's to bring their Home Agent product to market and is currently entering into trials with service providers. The Home Agent serves as an anchor point in a Mobile WiMAX network for the mobile subscriber station. It enables seamless mobility throughout a Mobile WiMAX network and roaming across different networks and geographies, so that when a subscriber moves to a new location, its stays seamlessly connected and is reachable.

Key benefits of WiChorus' Home Agent solution:

  • Enables mobile service providers to develop unique, revenue generating services and provides the intelligence to characterize, control, and monetize the open Internet
  • Includes built-in content management capabilities for enabling advanced features such as peer-to-peer traffic management, advanced accounting & billing, extensive QoS, and seamless mobility support, at lower CAPEX and OPEX.
  • Augments access services gateways that were not designed for advanced IP services.
  • Provides content handling capabilities designed specifically for 4G requirements.
  • Complies with WiMAX Forum® NWG specifications and interoperates with industry leading AAA servers

"Mobile IP is a critical element in 4G networks - but one that must be able to both handle data and user loads far greater than in 3G networks and be capable of supporting advanced applications, like content management," said Craig Mathias, a Principal with the wireless and mobile advisory firm Farpoint Group. "In addition being designed for high capacity and sitting at a very strategic location in a WiMAX network, the WiChorus Intelligent Home Agent enables service providers to create new service offerings (and realize new revenue opportunities) through advanced application and peer-to-peer traffic management."

Increasing consumer demand for high-speed mobility and direct access to Internet-based, media-rich services like Google and YouTube is forcing service providers to make Mobile IP a strategic component of existing and emerging wireless network architectures. This shift towards ubiquitous broadband access creates practical challenges for service providers as well as new revenue opportunities. As service providers open their networks to the Mobile Internet, they require high-performance, scalable solutions to support the development of large-scale mobile broadband networks.

"The Home Agent's strategic position in the mobile wireless network provides a unique opportunity for operators to leverage it beyond the basic Mobile IP and Home Agent functionality available in older generation technologies," said Rehan Jalil, President and CEO for WiChorus. "WiChorus 4G Home Agent's built-in advanced content management capabilities prevent a mobile network from becoming a dumb bit-pipe and transform it into a smart network. Operators are looking for means to manage and control their network assets and usage smartly and the WiChorus 4G Home Agent solution provides this capability without any additional hardware."

Enables Service Providers to Embrace the Mobile Internet
The WiChorus Home Agent works in conjunction with a Mobile IP Foreign Agent, such as an ASN Gateway, to ensure that IP-based subscriber stations can roam freely about the network while remaining reachable to other network users at all times. WiChorus' Home Agent sits in the data-forwarding path between the ASN-GW and the Internet in a WiMAX network, placing it in a strategic location for providing advanced services, such as peer-to-peer traffic management and differentiated quality of service (QoS). These advanced capabilities prevent service providers from simply becoming a "dumb" access pipe to the broader Internet, allowing them to create unique service offerings and ensure a premium user experience.

Service providers can use the WiChorus Home Agent solution to augment existing gateways that are capable of performing rudimentary IP forwarding or control plane but were not designed for the advanced content management necessary to monetize the mobile Internet. WiChorus' Home Agent delivers much greater intelligence, performance, and scalability than traditional offerings, enabling service providers to deploy large-scale, profitable WiMAX networks.

Expanding Interoperability through One Open WiMAX
The WiChorus Home Agent solution is fully compliant with the WiMAX Forum NWG specification, including supporting the unique WiMAX attributes required for interfacing to the Authentication Authorization Accounting (AAA) server. WiChorus has successfully completed interoperability testing of its Home Agent with AAA servers from industry-leading vendors including Bridgewater Systems and Aptilo Networks.

In a WiMAX network, WiChorus' Home Agent is required to interoperate with AAA servers; when a subscriber joins the network, a special message is sent to the Home Agent to notify it that it is the anchor point for that subscriber. Then, as part of the authentication process, the Home Agent sends a message to the AAA server to authenticate the subscriber and initiate relevant billing and charging functions.

WiChorus continues to lead the charge in driving interoperability efforts to speed the deployment of Mobile WiMAX networks. In conjunction with its industry-leading One Open WiMAX initiative, WiChorus has developed the industry's most extensive WiMAX Forum NWG interoperability testing capabilities available today. Its work with a wide variety of vendors throughout the mobile ecosystem helps in transforming a traditionally closed wireless core to an open, horizontal model that spurs innovation, competition, and best-of-breed choice for carriers.
