All of Stonyfield Farm yogurts, smoothies, and soy-yogurts - except for YoBaby Plus Fruit & Cereal, YoKids Squeezers, Oikos Greek Yogurt, and frozen yogurt - are certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO). And the company is in the process of getting other products certified as well.
"We didn't change these yogurts, smoothies, and soy-yogurts to make them gluten-free," says Stonyfield Farm President and CE-Yo Gary Hirshberg. "The only change is that we've completed the certification process administered by the GFCO and can now officially say 'gluten-free.' It's a certification we welcome, since we can now tell our consumers with gluten intolerance (celiac disease) that they can enjoy these foods without worry."
GFCO standards are met through a rigorous process of third-party audits and frequent product and ingredient testing at the manufacturing facility and from consumer shelves by GFCO. GFCO sets strict standards that finished products may not contain more than 10 ppm gluten, twice as strict as the proposed FDA and Codex definitions for gluten free.
About Stonyfield Farm
Stonyfield Farm, celebrating its 25th year, is the world's leading organic yogurt maker, and produces organic yogurt, smoothies, cultured soy, frozen yogurt, ice cream, and milk. The company advocates that healthy food can only come from a healthy planet. It was the nation's first dairy processor to pay farmers not to treat cows with the synthetic bovine growth hormone rBST. Stonyfield donates 10 percent of its profits to environmental causes; was America's first manufacturer to offset 100 percent of its CO2 emissions from its facility energy use; and recently installed the largest solar array in New Hampshire to help power its production plant. President and CE-Yo Gary Hirshberg addresses climate change in his new book, "Stirring it Up: How to Make Money and Save the World" (Hyperion). The Gluten-Free Certification Organization's (GFCO) provides an independent service to supervise gluten-free food production according to a consistent, defined, science-based standard that is confirmed by field inspections, in order to achieve heightened consumer confidence and safety. GFCO is 'Gluten-free you can easily see' through a trademarked logo on packaging. Products labeled with the GF certification mark allow consumers to easily identify items that have been independently verified to meet our high standards for gluten-free…potentially stricter than even the FDA will set as the standard for labeling.
