Nova Southeastern University (NSU), a long time leader in providing quality distance education programs, has begun offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Exceptional Student Education (ESE) that can be obtained entirely online.

The degree program provides initial teacher certification in Florida, meaning successful graduates of the program will have met the requirements set forth by the Florida Department of Education to teach in the state. However, the program could also serve as an avenue to teaching for prospective students in other states as well. "With the shortage of teachers in ESE being what it is, and the state of Florida having reciprocity agreements with the vast majority of other states, the fact that this degree's certification resides in Florida should not preclude prospective students in other states from applying to the program," stated Terry Davis, director of enrollment and recruitment at Nova Southeastern. "The students would simply need to check with their own department or agency that governs teacher certification. However, I would venture to guess that their chance of obtaining certification in their state in the area of ESE with this degree is high."

With teacher shortages, especially in the field of exceptional student education, expected to see continued increases, NSU is hoping to provide an opportunity for paraprofessionals, career changers, and single parents with the desire to teach but without the ability to quit their jobs and attend school full time in a traditional manner.

The impetus for the program came at the behest of the school's education provost, H. Wells Singleton, whose vision is to provide education to those who need it but cannot be hemmed in by traditional educational delivery modes. "At the charge of our provost, our faculty has worked extremely hard during the 2007-2008 academic year converting our face-to-face Exceptional Student Education undergraduate courses into a complete distance learning program," said Jamie Manburg, dean of undergraduate teacher education.

While common at the graduate level, there are few online degrees available in the area of teacher education for undergraduate students. "We are extremely proud to offer a complete distance learning baccalaureate program in the field of Exceptional Student Education," Manburg went on to say. "This will allow students nationally and internationally to be served by Nova Southeastern's Fischler School of Education and Human Services from a distance."
