Youngevity® Co-Sponsors Largest Health Claim Petition Ever Filed with FDA

On February 19, 2008, the law firm of Emord and Associates filed two petitions for qualified health claims with the Food and Drug Administration. San Diego, CA (PRWEB) March 15, 2008 -- On February 19, 2008, the law firm of Emord and Associates filed two petitions for qualified health claims with the Food and Drug Administration. The petitions address advances in scientific support concerning past selenium and antioxidant vitamin health claims and request numerous additional, specific claims. The firm filed these petitions in addition to its public comment on FDA's intent to reevaluate existing health claims.

On December 17, 2007, the Food and Drug Administration announced its intent to reevaluate several health claims associating selenium and antioxidant vitamins with cancer risk. Convincing scientific evidence supports a link between these substances and a reduction in the risk of myriad site-specific cancers. The new health claim petitions request FDA to acknowledge the current scientific evidence by approving new beneficial claims.

The comments and petitions are backed by four extensive scientific reports accompanied by thousands of peer-reviewed papers. Two of the reports on selenium are authored by Doctors Passwater and Schrauzer. The petitions request ten new claims associating selenium with reduction in the risk of site-specific cancers and another seeking allowance of some eight claims associating antioxidants with reduction in the risk of site-specific cancers.

This petition is the largest health claim submission ever made to the Food and Drug Administration. It is filed on behalf of Petitioners Julian M. Whitaker, MD, The Coalition to End FDA and FTC Censorship, Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw, and Youngevity®, Inc.
