This gift came after First Lady Helen Taft and Viscountess Chinda - the wife of the Japanese Ambassador, planted the first two cherry trees in West Potomac Park. President William Howard Taft was an active member of the Freemason Fraternity. West Potomac Park also holds a memorial built to Thomas Jefferson, commissioned by another Freemason and President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
