Sierra Club NYC Report Prepares for Higher Fuel Costs

Building on New York City's PlaNYC 2030, the Sierra Club NYC report, "Sustainable Energy Independence for NYC", prepares for sharply higher fuel prices and their local impact on transportation, heating, shipping, electricity, and food costs. New York, NY (PRWEB) March 19, 2008 -- Building on New York City's PlaNYC 2030, the Sierra Club NYC report, "Sustainable Energy Independence for NYC", prepares for sharply higher fuel prices and their local impact on transportation, heating, shipping, electricity, and food costs. The report is available online at www.beyondoilnyc.org.

The current rise of oil prices to over $110 per barrel is not an anomaly. With world oil production expected to peak and begin permanent decline by 2015 or earlier, gasoline prices will be increasingly volatile and will tend to become much more expensive. When gasoline costs $5 or $10 a gallon, demand for mass transit service will rise, increasing the urgent need for mass transit funding from congestion pricing. Even though its extensive public transit system makes NYC less vulnerable to oil price spikes than other cities, short-term consequences of higher prices may not be immediately obvious. Higher oil and natural gas prices will also affect costs of heating, shipping, government operations, electricity and food.

Endorsed by nearly 20 local groups, including NY Apollo Alliance, Sierra Club NYC's new report "Sustainable Energy Independence for NYC" discusses local impacts and mitigations for volatile energy prices (www.beyondoilnyc.org). Its primary request is for City officials to convene an Energy Volatility Task Force to study future energy price and supply scenarios, as has been done by San Francisco and Portland, Oregon.

The Sierra Club is America's oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization. Founded in 1892, the Club has over 700,000 members, with about 15,000 in NYC.
