T he e-book covers oral health and sexual issues from young adulthood through old age and includes the latest research concerning teens and the rise of STDs and throat cancer, the connection between smoking pot and gum disease, and how gum disease is thought to negatively affect pregnant women and their unborn fetuses.
Dr. Smith, a passionate believer in educating the public about oral health care, developed "Healthy Mouth, Healthy Sex!" to help explain scientific research regarding the connection between oral health and sexual health. "In recent years," says Dr. Smith, "the scientific community, the federal government, and the American Dental Association have all devoted increased attention to the importance of maintaining oral health for whole body health. "Despite recent research," says Dr. Smith, "it's still difficult to find information about the connection between one's oral health and sexual well-being. For example, bad breath is an oral health condition -- you wouldn't go see a medical doctor about it -- but it can also be a sign of other serious illnesses, and it can definitely put a serious damper on your sex life. And, research has proven that untreated periodontal disease can cause low birth-weight babies and even miscarriages -- yet women still do not know they should visit a dentist before getting pregnant in order to ensure they have healthy teeth and gums."
In addition to her e-book, Dr. Smith has developed YouTube videos, podcasts, and her Website in order to educate consumers about good oral health care. In her YouTube videos, for example, she talks about infection control in the dental office and painless injections.
