It's Not Porn, It's Pixel Advertising 2.0

A new web-based television show resurrects and enhances pixel advertising as a form of monetization to help produce and promote its special brand of video.

The method of displaying the pixel ads as a border around the video player is a simple, yet effective approach to the over-saturated pixel ad sites of yesteryear that offered nothing but pixel ads.

Expanding upon Alex Tew's famous pixel advertising endeavor, Million Dollar Homepage, Lester Nightingale intends to refine the quirky ad format by introducing his website, Secret Sex Freaks, featuring free and original video content supported by pixel ads.

Despite the eye-catching name, this is not a porn site, but a web-based comedy show instead. "The risqué name increases the chance of the show becoming viral as we're focusing it on the 18-34 year-old male demographic." states Lester. "The method of displaying the pixel ads as a border around the video player is a simple, yet effective approach to the over-saturated pixel ad sites of yesteryear that offered nothing but pixel ads."

The fledgling web producer gives credit to Tew for creating a truly unique form of internet display advertising. Part of the problem with traditional pixel advertising, he contends, is the lack of content. Hundreds of copycat sites including Tew's own spin-off site, Pixelotto, suffered from essentially the same problem: after the initial mass media coverage of Alex Tew's homepage there was no more novelty to pixel ad sites dedicated to just pixel ads. Even the prospect of winning a jackpot at Pixelotto had limited appeal.

That's where Pixel Advertising 2.0 comes in, using original video content to draw in viewers while restricting the supply of pixel ads available to a reasonable amount. Instead of 10,000 blocks of 10x10 pixel cells employed widely by the Million Dollar Homepage and other pixel sites, it uses a mere 1,584 pixel blocks wrapped around the video player. In addition to the convention established by Tew of a permanent ad subscription of $100 per 10x10 pixel block, Secret Sex Freaks will be offering temporary pixel subscriptions starting at $10 per month.

"If we can make it affordable and get advertisers on board then we'll be able to put out episodes faster and better," claims Lester. "It's a different form of user-supported content. It helps us raise funds to increase the production and in turn, we intend to reward our advertisers with plenty of good clicks at a great rate. With the recent Hollywood Writers strike, the timing is good as viewers continue to flock to new media. To capitalize on this, we have plans to launch more shows using this template in an effort to create a pixel ad-supported web show network. We aim to prove that pixel advertising is more than just a fad. With original video content, pixel advertising has renewed relevance and is here to stay."
