At CTIA Wireless 2008, Mobile Metrics announced the immediate availability of the Torrent 7220, which provides functional, stress, and performance testing for 802.16e Mobile WiMAXTM base stations, and which also allows for mobile station testing as it provides a complete end-to-end WiMAX ecosystem. The Torrent 7220 builds on the foundation established by its predecessor, the Torrent 7100, which was the world's first commercial system for testing ASN Gateways and CSNs.
One of the key characteristics of the 7220 is that it supports thousands of mobiles per channel while still honoring QoS scheduling requirements, thus enabling testing of very high capacity traffic profiles while at the same time capturing detailed statistics that allow accurate characterization of the end user experience.
"The 7220 is really a significant accomplishment for us because of the relative complexity and sophistication of the specifications it implements," said founder and CEO Asa Atallah. "We're delighted to offer this solution to the market and feel that it breaks new ground in the field of base station testing with its per-channel capacity, flexibility and comprehensive feature set."
The 7220 uses a PHY-bypass mode following Intel's OFDMA PHY SAP specification, allowing very significant testing of base stations and mobiles to be performed, prior to completion of and independently of baseband / RF hardware. To address the critical issue of PHY and over the air testing, Mobile Metrics plans to release the Torrent 7240 next month, which will build on the 7220 by providing complete 802.16e PHY functionality.
