Roswell, NM (PRWEB) April 2, 2008 -- Cosmetology students from Aladdin Academy, 108 South Union in Roswell won four awards, including first, second, third and fourth place at t the recent Express Yourself Educational Forum in Fort Worth, Texas. Even though the Roswell campus represented only a small percentage of the contestants, they brought home a lion's share of the top prizes.

Rachael Campbell-Bragg was a double winner, placing first in the Bridal Mannequin competition and second place in the Fantasy Mannequin competition. Sara Huddleston placed third in the Fantasy Mannequin competition and Tamara Farley came in fourth in the Bridal Mannequin competition. The school also placed sixth and seventh in the three-person team contest.

The Roswell students competed against future cosmetologists from nine beauty schools in Texas, including ITS Academy and Aladdin Beauty College; six schools in New Mexico and Oklahoma, including the Olympian University campuses and Aladdin Beauty College.

There were three categories: a competition for a Bridal Mannequin, a Fantasy Mannequin, as well as a three-person team event. In the Bridal Competition, students were told to create a beautiful and fashionable bridal up-do with a "total look" theme that included make-up decorations, ornamentation and clothing. In the Fantasy Competition students were told to pull out the stops and create an innovative "fantasy" design for both hair and makeup. Both categories were judged based on creativity, originality, innovation, color and theme.

"We are a small school, but it is not unusual for us to win the lion's share of the awards," said Peggy Richburg, director of the Roswell cosmetology school. "We have some very talented instructors and they encourage the students to prepare for the competition early. We also do a number of fundraisers so as many students as possible can compete. All 20 of the students who wanted to compete were able to make it to the Hair Show."

The 1600-hour cosmetology curriculum consists of: Theory of Cosmetology and New Mexico Law; Haircutting; Shampooing; Hair Coloring; Hair Styling; Chemical Hair Restructuring; Lightening; Facials and Makeup; Massage; Nail Technology; Treatment of the Hair and Scalp; Electricity and Light Therapy; Creative Preference; Disinfection Procedures; as well as lectures and demonstrators on the uses of new products and tools of the trade. Graduates are eligible to apply for a license through the New Mexico State of Cosmetology.

The instructor course consists of a 1000-hour program that trains the student in the basic teaching skills, educational judgments, proper work habits, and desirable attitudes necessary to pass the State Board examination and for competency in job entry level employment as an instructor or related career avenue.
