Customers should not be afraid to pick up the phone and call the manufacturer and asks questions

Power Supplements has completed a review of the Acai berry products on the market and discovered a number of disturbing trends. Among the most disturbing issues were the numerous "Pure Acai" products that were found to actually contain crushed seeds, malodextrin and other ingredients.

The Acai berry has gained international recognition as one of the highest antioxidant fruits in the world. Dr. Perricone named the Acai berry as the #1 Superfood on the Oprah Winfrey show. Acai has been featured on the Today Shows CBS Early Show, Wall Street Jounal and the New York Times. In addition to the incredible antioxidant levels in the Acai berry, the Acai berry is rich in anthocyanins, fiber, healthy omega fats, amino acids, protein, plant sterols, vitamins and minerals.

Over the last three months, Power Supplements has looked at the majority of Acai products on the market. This study of Acai products has uncovered the top five problems in the Acai industry:
1. Acai seeds being used in Acai juices and supplements
2. "Fairy Dusting" with Acai for marketing purposes
3. Proprietary Acai formulas make it impossible to know how much Acai is in a product.
4. Malodextrin has been found in spray dried Acai products
5. Use of fillers and flowing agents in "Pure Acai" products

Dan Nessel, Head of Research at Power Supplements finds these issues frustrating and calls for the industry to be more responsible. "The Acai berry is 90% seed - no one, and I mean no one, in the Amazon eats the Acai seed. There are creative things to do with the seed, like making necklaces or using the seed as a form of renewal energy. The one thing you don't do with the seed is eat it. So, when we found four different Acai products using the Acai seed we were very alarmed." states Nessel.

Acai has received so much buzz in the media that companies are scrambling to include Acai in their product lines. The Power Supplements study finds that numerous companies are guilt of adding just a trace amount of Acai to their products so they can be marketed as Acai products - a procedure known as "Fairy Dusting" in the industry. While the label might say Acai, there is not enough Acai present in the formula to have any real health benefits.

The final three issues - proprietary formulas, the use of Malodextrin and the addition of fillers and flowing agents have been long standing problems in the Acai industry. "In the end, the consumer wants to be able to look at various Acai products and compare them fairly. How is this possible when the majority of Acai products hide behind proprietary formulas and don't state the amount of Acai in their product? How is a consumer to know that an Acai supplement might be filled with Malodextrin when the FDA does not require it be listed on the label? Finally, how does the consumer know how much magnesium stearate, rice and other fillers and flowing agents are in the Acai product they are taking?" states Nessel.

The Power Supplements study concludes that the best way to shop for Acai products is to study the label and ask the manufacturer questions. Acai supplements that are freeze dried, organic, made only from skin and pulp (no Acai seeds), contain no other ingredients and clearly state the amount of Acai per serving are you best bet. "Customers should not be afraid to pick up the phone and call the manufacturer and asks questions," said Dan Nessel. "If a company does not want to tell you exactly what is in their Acai product - that is a good sign to move on to another company that is more open and honest." states Nessel.
