Get Ahead with Ideas for Creating a Stash of Handmade Birthday Cards

Don't get caught without a birthday card at the last minute. Spend a single crafting session making quick handmade cards with nine easy design ideas from Lettering Delights.

Orem, Utah (PRWEB) April 8, 2008 -- Having a supply of birthday cards on hand is a great way to save time and avoid stress later. As Lettering Delights celebrates their eighth birthday, they share nine ideas for quick handmade birthday cards using customized lettering or clip art. These cards are easy to mass produce for the upcoming birthdays of family and friends. With your stash of completed cards you can sit back and relax as the birthdays roll around, ready to wish the happiest of birthdays with a handcrafted card.

"I love feeling prepared. Having a stash of birthday cards ready to go is a relief and a time saver," said Jill Simmons, Lettering Delights Art Director.

I love feeling prepared. Having a stash of birthday cards ready to go is a relief and a time saver
To start your birthday card stash, clear off a comfortable work space. Determine how many cards you'll need to get through the season or the whole year, and line up your supplies. For the ideas below, you'll need: cardstock or blank cards, computer, color printer, scissors or paper trimmer, exacto knife, adhesive and any extra accents, such as ribbon, buttons, tags, brads or eyelets.

For easy card accents, purchase a few scrapbooking fonts, digital alphabets and clip art from Lettering Delights, for as little as $2 each. Prepare the digital embellishments as desired in a word processor or desktop publishing program (see suggestions below), copy and paste to maximize the space on each page and print all the copies you'll need at once.

Complete each step of the card-making process for all of the cards you'll need, then move on to the next step and finish all cards to that point before continuing. You'll enjoy saving time as you efficiently prepare your cards. You can vary the designs a little as you work (and stagger their use) so nobody feels they're getting a cloned card. What they'll remember most is that they received a cute, handmade card.

1.   Choose a single Doodlebat (a crafty kind of dingbat font that may include words, phrases and images). Enlarge the font size of the Doodlebat, print and place on the center of the card.
2.   Change the color of a Doodlebat character to white and print on a block of color. Tip: In a word processor, make a shape box and fill it with color. Type the Doodlebat on top of the box in white. For example, see the "Star" cards, attached.
3.   Print a Doodlebat and adhere it to a metal-rimmed tag. Tip: Print the Doodlebat on vellum or white paper, and you won't have to spend as much time trimming it perfectly.
4.   Design your own patterned paper. Arrange the same Doodlebat character in a repeating pattern, or make a pattern using several Doodlebats. Add a greeting in a creative font and a strip of ribbon or other embellishment. For example, see the "Celebrate" card, attached.
5.   Make Doodlebats into embellishments by printing and cutting them out with an exacto knife. Cutting tip: Cut away small pieces first, then move to the bigger areas. See the "Party Girl" card, attached.
6.   Use one or more Journaling Delights (clip art images) as the central embellishment. Print, trim and center on card. Tip: Choose images that are easy to trim. Groups of three images that are nearly uniform in shape and size look great together. See the "Ice Cream" card, attached.
7.   Use a Journaling Delights image for a pocket or tag embellishment. Tip: For easier trimming, make a shape box in your word processor and fill it with color. Place the clip art image on top of the box, print, trim and adhere to card.
8.   Print just one large digital alphabet letter. Use a creative font for the rest of the lettering. For example, see the "Cherry on top" card, attached.
9.   Type one or two words in a digital alphabet using Lettering Delights' Online Title-Maker. Save the alphabet file to your computer and insert in a blank document. Type the rest of your greeting in a font. Print, trim and adhere to card. See birthday card examples here.
