Red Lorry? Yellow Lorry? No, Green Lorries Are Best
As being green becomes more of a way of life for most of us, parts of the haulage industry are taking up inventive new ways of minimising their effect on the environment. One of these companies, Modec, has just won an award for their efforts, and others such as Haulage Exchange and H Wragg Transport are also leading the way in finding greener solutions for haulage vehicles.
London, UK (PRWEB) April 6, 2008 -- UK company Modec has won an award for most innovative product for their green alternative for haulage industry vehicles, and this is just one example of the new trend in greener solutions for the haulage world. Other contributors include freight exchange company Haulage Exchange and haulage company H Wragg Transport.
Manufactured in the UK, the award-winning Modec is a new electric vehicle that generates zero emissions and is virtually silent. The product was selected by trade media editors at the Work Truck Show 2008 in Atlanta as the most innovative product to debut at the show.
'This award showed that Modec is being noticed by the people who count in the United States,' said Lord Borwick, Modec chairman. According to Modec, many haulage companies are now introducing the Modec into their fleets.
This award follows a recent report, which suggested that the UK haulage industry could reduce its emissions by 12 per cent over the next decade. Many haulage companies are now proving this is a possibility by implementing greener haulage options for their fleets.
Another company keen to bring green solutions into the world of haulage is freight exchange company Haulage Exchange. The company's Managing Director Lyall Cresswell believes all haulage companies have a duty to do their bit for the environment, and that his company, which enables lorry drivers to switch their loads, has a positive influence on the environment.
'At Haulage Exchange', he said, 'we put haulage companies and owner-operators in touch with one another so they can carry each other's loads.
'An empty lorry is an environmentally unfriendly lorry. By giving lorries extra loads when they would otherwise be travelling empty, I believe freight exchanges like us are making a contribution to moving towards a greener society.'
Another way haulage companies can become greener is by switching to biofuels. Haulage company H Wragg Transport from Shropshire has proved this is a feasible option by converting all of their 44-tonne vehicles to run on unmixed biofuel in a bid to reduce emissions and costs.
Malcolm Wragg, the haulage company's owner, discovered to his surprise that using the new fuel had no noticeable effect on the performance of his fleet. 'At first I was worried that the lorries might not operate as well', he said, 'perhaps with a loss of power and so on, but that isn't the case.'
The firm said that the cost of upgrading its haulage vehicles to run on a rapeseed-based biofuel would be offset within a year due to its cheaper costs.
According to Cresswell, these moves towards greener haulage represent a trend which is likely to keep gaining ground as we all become more and more conscious about our environment. 'At Haulage Exchange', he said, 'we try to keep up to date with changes in the Haulage industry which could be relevant to our clients.
'From the developments I've noticed over the last few years, I feel certain that greener haulage is going to be around for the long run.' Bad news for those red lorries and yellow lorries then - green lorries are here to stay.
