Marner Storage Technologies Named One of 'Top 10 Storage Startups to Watch'

Popular Industry News Site 'Byte and Switch' Chooses Minnesota Firm for Its Prestigious List; Experienced Storage Executive Stephen J. Carter Named Marner's New CEO

Stillwater, MN (PRWEB) April 9, 2008 -- Secretive Minnesota startup Marner Storage Technologies (www.marner.com) has been named to a list of ten of the most promising new data storage firms by Byte and Switch, a major news and analysis resource for the storage networking industry. The site, a unit of leading tech publisher CMP Technology, began covering the storage networking business in 2001. Its latest "Top 10 Storage Startups to Watch List" is now available online at www.byteandswitch.com/document.asp?doc_id=146131.

According to Byte and Switch, "The new list comprises notable newbies with a range of innovative bids for storage managers' attention - and purchase orders." The editors said each of their top 10 startups possesses the following key attributes:

  • A really interesting gamble or a creative take on an important storage or storage-related problem
  • Current impact, demonstrated in getting new funding, launching new products, or adding significant partnerships sometime within the last 18 months
  • Solid initial backing in the form of an angel round, spinoff support, or an official venture round
  • Partnerships, customers, or contracts in place that prove they're more than vaporware
"Meeting all these criteria isn't easy," said Byte and Switch editor James Rogers. "But the storage market continues to expand with customers' burgeoning data, and those customers are willing to pay for tools and technologies that save them money in capital costs, operational fees, and environmental expenses. So, there's room for companies with the right ideas to get a toehold, in spite of macroeconomic conditions."

Marner Announces CEO
In another recent development, Marner Storage Technologies revealed it has named Stephen J. Carter as President and CEO. Carter has more than thirty years experience in the high-technology industry, with 25+ years in management. At both Imation and QLogic, Carter was a corporate officer with responsibilities for leading several $100M+ businesses in storage technology. Most recently, at QLogic, as VP and GM of the Switch Products Group, based in suburban Minneapolis, Carter had P&L responsibility for the fibre channel switch business and was responsible for product development, which included design and development of custom ASICs, hardware, firmware, software, product marketing, and operations. Previously, at Imation, as VP and GM of several business units, Carter had P&L responsibility for worldwide sales, marketing, and development for consumer storage products in addition to network storage products. During his 24 years at IBM, Carter held various positions in sales technical support, product development, and product marketing. He received his undergraduate degree in Business Management from the University of Notre Dame.

About Marner
Marner Storage Technologies develops innovative network storage products and virtualization systems that help businesses and solution providers meet the needs of today's data-intensive environments with its patented technology and "green-friendly" design. Marner's products offer solution providers a robust adaptable platform that is an "engine" for storage applications.

Marner Storage Technologies is an outgrowth of Marner Micro, which has been providing ruggedized servers for military and defense markets for more than 15 years. Deployments of Marner's SmartSAN™ storage technology already include the U.S. Navy, banks, telecom, insurance, oil & gas exploration, aviation, and the McMurdo Station in Antarctica. The firm is now raising capital to ramp-up production for its next-generation storage solutions.

The company's products are ruggedized, scalable, fully redundant RAID storage systems utilizing its advanced SmartSAN™ software offerings, including thin provisioning, tiered storage, de-duplication, and virtualization, all of which are quick to deploy, easy to manage, and work seamlessly with existing data storage systems, including those for server virtualization environments such as VMware and XenSource.

Marner's SmartSAN™technology allows end-user companies to better manage operational costs, which are far larger over the life of the investment than the costs to acquire a technology.
