Moo Shoes, a vegan footwear retailer in New York City, announced today that it will sponsor and host an event for Oasis Sanctuary, to help find new homes for abandoned dogs and cats. The event will take place at Moo Shoes' retail location on Orchard Street in downtown Manhattan on Saturday, April 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The event will be an all-day affair. There will be over a dozen rescued animals from Oasis Sanctuary looking for their "forever homes." Oasis Sanctuary has promised to bring cats and dogs of all shapes and sizes. Volunteers will also be on hand to answer any questions regarding any prospective adoptee.
"As a vegan business, we feel it is our obligation to help any non-profit sanctuary or animal rights group in any capacity we are able to," said Erica Kubersky, who owns Moo Shoes along with her sister, Sara. "The homeless animal epidemic breaks our hearts. Having an adoption day with Oasis, one of our favorite sanctuaries, is the least we can do. Our goal is to find forever homes for at least some of these deserving critters," added Kubersky.
Oasis will be getting help from The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, based in Utah. Best Friends is working with humane groups all across the country to eliminate the practice of destroying homeless, unwanted animals in shelters. "We are hoping that the Oasis Sanctuary dogs and cats finally have the experience of living in a home. When people adopt them they are not only taking on wonderful companions, they're also helping relieve the strain on the resources of the sanctuary and supporting the lives of many other animals," said Medha Issacs, Best Friends Animal Society Animal Specialist.
Treats and drinks will be donated by Pumpkins Organic Grocery, which is based in Park Slope, Brooklyn. They specialize in hard to find vegetarian products and organic produce.
Even if participants are unable to adopt, they are encouraged to come to the event and offer their pledges and support. In addition to sponsoring the event, Moo Shoes has also agreed to donate ten percent of all sales made that day to the Oasis Sanctuary. Moo Shoes is also home to four adopted rescue felines.
"We are very excited about the event. It is our chance to work with some of our favorite fellow businesses and non profits," added Ms. Kubersky. "And, we get to help some animals find new, loving homes."
