SpamButcher Releases "Anticipated Sender" Standard to Combat False Positives

Spam filter "false positives" pose a problem for both legitimate commercial email senders and end-users. Anti-spam software provider, SpamButcher (http://www.spambutcher.com) has published an open standard called "Anticipated Sender" to help deal with the issue.

(PRWEB) April 23, 2008 -- A problem plaguing all anti-spam solutions to some degree is the issue of incorrectly filtered messages known as "false positives."

Wanted email messages such as newsletters and sales receipts often contain many elements in common with spam messages. Embedded images, "unsubscribe" notices and multiple recipients can cause spam filters to inaccurately tag a message as being spam.

Anti-spam software provider, SpamButcher is offering a solution to the problem in the form of an open standard called "Anticipated Sender."

When a website wants to offer a newsletter subscription or other automated email messages to a user - they can also present them with a special link to an Anticipated Sender file containing the sender's email address.

If the user clicks the link, the file is downloaded and processed by their spam filter. The spam filtering application then presents the user with the option of adding the sender's address to the user's list of known email addresses to be exempt from filtering.

SpamButcher 2.1 is the first spam filter to support the standard.

SpamButcher is publishing the details of this standard for use by webmasters, legitimate commercial email senders and spam filter developers without charge.

Other efforts to assure email delivery have depended on centralized databases of validated senders. This forces users to trust a third-party to accurately decide who's a spammer and who's not.

In contrast, Anticipated Sender has the advantage of letting the user specifically decide which senders to allow.
