PD-LD Introduces Pulsed Dual Laser Combiner Module

Test Equipment customers enjoy benefits of unique product

Pennington, N.J. (PRWEB) April 28, 2008 -- PD-LD, Inc., the worldwide leader in Volume Bragg Grating® (VBG®) technology, has introduced its next generation of Dual Wavelength Laser Combiner Modules. These unique new assemblies, now including two single mode pulsed light sources, have already earned praise from major fiber optic test equipment manufacturers who had early access to product prototypes.

"PD-LD continues to lead the way in innovative thinking and problem solving that saves our customers time and money in the real world," said Dr. Vladimir Ban, PD-LD President and CEO. "The pulsed dual laser combiner is one of many products that demonstrates our commitment to meeting a broad range of customer needs."

The Dual Wavelength Pulsed Laser Combiner Modules are designed to couple light from two different semiconductor laser diodes, operating at 1310nm and 1550nm, into one single mode optical fiber output. The single fiber dual wavelength combiner modules offer users the simplicity of utilizing a single component when configuring equipment that requires the output of two different laser wavelengths. These Combiner Modules combine two sources in a single housing, thus relieving the user of having to fusion splice two discreet lasers with a coupler and squeeze them onto their printed circuit boards.

"This model built with pulsed laser diodes to specifically address the optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) market," according to Tom DeBerardine, PD-LD Director of Sales. "Not only does the product reduce the end users testing time, it allows the instrument designers to create a more compact product. We listened to our customers and developed an active optical sub-assembly to address their specific requirements."

The small, compact devices require minimal board real estate and are intended for use in single-port instruments that can switch between 1310 nm and 1510 nm output. They allow for testing the optical fiber at both wavelengths after making only a single connection. The PD-LD product incorporates low threshold current, high differential quantum efficiency Multiple Quantum Well FP semiconductor lasers. Each laser couples >50mW of peak pulsed optical power into SMF, yet may also be operated at 1mW cw conditions when continuous power is needed.

Like all PD-LD products, the Combiner Modules are built to meet the demanding requirements of the instrumentation marketplace. The units are assembled using state of the art YAG Laser welding processes. This technique guarantees a semiconductor to optical fiber interface to remain stable over mechanical and environmental extremes. The optical semiconductor die are mounted within hermetically sealed TO can subassemblies, making them impervious to contaminants and moisture. Each of the laser diodes are protected by an internal optical isolator, ensuring stable performance and insensitivity to optical back reflections.
