Understanding Male Violence in America

What causes it and how to solve it.

Longwood, FL (PRWEB) April 30, 2008 -- In his new book Autobiography of Black Male Violence: A Personal Critique of Episodic Male Violence in America (paperback, 978-1-60647-104-3) John Porter attempts to "respond to despondent parents who have lost loved ones to violence and who sadly leave funerals asking, 'Why can't we stop all this killing?'" Through anecdotal essays he has "sought to dig deeper into the origins and history of violent episodes in America." He also offers nonviolent solutions to the problem.

Porter believes "each of us can share tragic stories of how violence has disrupted the lives of people we love. Hardly a day goes by in America," he says, in which "the news media and the citizenry are not screaming loud and clear, 'Stop the violence!'" His book supports "stronger handgun legislation while protecting citizens' right to bear arms under the second amendment to the U.S. Constitution."

He notes "some reviewers consider Autobiography of Black Male Violence to be the most important book on urban violence since Alex Haley's Autobiography of Malcolm X, James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time and Alex Haley's Roots."

The Rev. John R. Porter, Ph.D., has lived with violence for 70 years. He majored in sociology, philosophy and religion, and theology; worked with Martin Luther King Jr.; pastored a church where Chicago's Gangster Disciples roamed; taught urban sociology at two colleges; had his life threatened and was arrested in a peaceful protest in the 1960s.
