A Call For "Green-Agers": The Weather Channel Forecast Earth Summit Open For Entries

Environmental Experts and TWC Personalities to Lead Presentations and Activities

Atlanta (PRWEB) April 30, 2008 -- The Weather Channel continues to demonstrate its commitment to educate the next generation regarding climate and environmental literacy. The all-weather network announces the second Forecast Earth Summit, December 5 - 7, 2008 in Washington, D.C., due to the success of the first-ever event held in 2007.

The three-day Forecast Earth Summit focuses on environmental education and will afford 20 students the opportunity to engage with numerous environmental leaders, enthusiasts and scientists. Last year's Summit was led by celebrity guest Hayden Panettiere and included TWC personalities such as climate expert Dr. Heidi Cullen, water researcher Dr. Marcus Eriksen, and environmental zoologist Jarod Miller. Participating students at the Forecast Earth Summit will engage in hands-on activities such as building and launching a boat made entirely of recycled materials and creating a public service announcement (PSA) that will air on The Weather Channel and online at weather.com.

The Summit is an exclusive opportunity for students to share their ideas regarding the environment with leading environmental experts and with a great group of like-minded teenagers
"The Summit is an exclusive opportunity for students to share their ideas regarding the environment with leading environmental experts and with a great group of like-minded teenagers," said Lynn Brindell, executive vice president of strategic marketing at TWC. "We work with these students to promote environmental literacy, and the Summit also allows The Weather Channel to demonstrate its knowledge and commitment - in person - to the next generation."

In addition, eco-ambassadors will enjoy organic food, green transportation, and eco-friendly hotel accommodations. They will take part in tours, focus groups, and panel discussions with leading environmental minds. Last year's 2007 Summit welcomed musician and environmentalist Adam Garner, Al Gore-trained climate speaker Taylor Francis, and representatives from the National Environmental Education Foundation, the U.S. Green Building Council, World Wildlife Fund and Carbonfund.org.

Forecast Earth Summit Entry Details:
The Forecast Earth Summit is geared toward high school freshman, sophomore and junior students. Entry submission requirements include contact information, photo, and an essay. In 200 words or less, applicants should explain what they are doing to make a difference in their environment and to make their community "clean and green." Beginning April 19, interested students can submit entries online at www.forecastearthsummit.org. The deadline for entry is October 19, 2008. The selected 20 winners and their chaperones will be flown to Washington, D.C. December 5-7, 2008.

More About Last Year's Forecast Earth Summit:

Last year's carbon-neutral Summit brought together 22 eco-ambassadors from 14 states to experience speakers, discussions and hands-on activities. The eco-superstars heard from speakers such as actress and environmental advocate Hayden Panettiere, musician and philanthropist Adam Garner, Dr. Heidi Cullen and Dr. Marcus Eriksen of The Weather Channel among others. The "green-agers" were able to enjoy Capitol Hill, Sidwell Friends School and the Koshland Science Museum. In their words:

"What inspired me most at the Summit was the gathering of high school students around the country who share the same desire and commitment to the environment." - Charles Ferrer, Bergenfield, NJ

"I thank [The Weather Channel for organizing, hosting, and creating the Forecast Earth Summit. Not only has the Summit changed my life, it has stimulated me to participate in the educating of others about climate change." - Norman Bent, Mooresville, NC

"I was taught to look at the world in a whole new perspective. Overall, the Summit was a very successful and enjoyable event for all involved. It seemed as if the weekend was over so quickly, but it really opened our eyes and left us motivated and informed about our world. Greatly inspired, we left with a new view of the climate crisis, what can be done, and what kids like us are already doing to improve the world for future generations." - Aiman Arif, Freemont, CA (in a school newspaper article)

I will always remember my experience at the Summit, and will always be grateful to the Weather Channel for my wonderful trip. Thank you so much!" - Emily Goldstein, Louisville, KY

"I feel my mind has been broadened to the capability of our generation to make positive changes and impact on our world. I think the difference between pre-Summit and post-Summit is the experience itself. I think I'm a better person for having experienced the whole event...It lends credibility to who I am, what I stand for, and my vision for the future." - Josh Morrison, Anniston, AL
