Silicon Valley Soap Box Derby to be Run June 1, 2008 in Mountain View/ Mayor Tom Means Challenges South Bay Mayor's in Special Race
In conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Silicon Valley Soap Box Derby, Mountain View Mayor Tom Means has invited the mayors of San Jose, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Cupertino to participate in a single elimination race down the same hill that will be used by the kids for this year's Soap Box Derby. In addition to bragging rights, the winner of The Mayor's Cup Challenge will be able to showcase the prestigious Mayor's Cup in the venue of their choice for the next year.

Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) April 30, 2008 -- The All American Soap Box Derby has been going strong for 72 years. Its local affiliate, The Silicon Valley Soap Box Derby is in its second year. In addition to its three racing division for kids, this eco-friendly, gravity powered event will be adding The Mayor's Cup Challenge to its day long roster of racing on June 1, 2008 beginning at 9AM.

Soap Box Derby provides an exciting opportunity for kids aged 8-17 to experience the exhilaration of building and driving a race car in a completely safe, zero-emission and family oriented setting. In addition to its two core divisions (Stock and Super-Stock), SVSBD incorporated the first Super Kids race in Northern California. Super Kids pairs a disabled child with an experienced driver in custom-built, 2 seat race cars. All three divisional winners (Stock; Super-Stock; and Super-Kids) will experience the thrill of a lifetime as they go on to represent SVSBD in the national Soap Box Derby race on July 26, 2008 in Akron, Ohio.
With the addition of the Mayor's Cup Challenge, spectators will be able to root for their favorite racer and their favorite Mayor. The Mayor's will race in the custom built Super Kid Cars, which will be fitted with a single seat for the Mayor's Cup Challenge. The Mayor's Cup will be held in the afternoon and sequenced to coincide with the very exciting finalist brackets in the Stock and Super Stock divisions.
Race Director Joe Sparaco conceived of the idea of the Mayor's Cup as, "…a way to broaden community awareness of an exciting and growing event as well as adding to any already fun filled day."
Location: Dana Street in Mountain View, CA. The top of the race hill overlooks Highway 85 with the finish line before Calderon Ave. The best spot to view the race is from Landels Elementary School on Dana Street. Parking is available at the Evelyn Light Rail Station or take the light rail to the race.
