BNI Explains How to Survive an Economic Downturn in any Part of the World

Dr. Ivan Misner, Founder and Chairman of BNI, the world's largest business networking organization, explains that the economy goes through cycles and there is no reason to let a bad economy be an excuse for failure.

Recently, in many parts of the globe, people have been fearing the coming of an economic downturn. However, you do not have to let a bad economy be your excuse for failure. Instead, you should make it your opportunity to succeed.

"I've been through three recessionary periods in my business," says Dr. Misner. "I don't need a crystal ball; I have history and here's what it tells me: People with a strong network will survive and even thrive during downturns in the economy. I've seen this repeated over and over."

While you cannot control the economy or your competition, you can control your response to the economy. If you want to do well in business, you must understand that it does absolutely no good to complain to people about tough times. When you complain about how bad business is, half the people you tell don't care and the other half are glad you're worse off than they are. Instead, refuse to participate in a recession by focusing on looking for opportunities and developing your networking skills so that you can build your business through word of mouth.

BNI member Tom Doiron says, "Regardless of the economic conditions, someone always has some money to spend. With word-of-mouth marketing, it is easier to connect with that someone with money to spend . . . life is always a balance and if the money is light in one place, then it must be heavy in another place. Referral marketing helps identify those places with heavy money."
