200 Bellingham martial artists are raising funds for Asayo's Wish Children's Village, an orphanage in Uganda. Students at Shayne Simpson's Pacific Northwest Karate Center are seeking sponsors for the Kick-A-Thon May 3rd.

Can the power of a kick be felt from 8625 miles away? The students at Shayne Simpson's Pacific Northwest Karate Center in Bellingham, WA, believe it can.

On Saturday, May 3, PNWKC is holding a Kick-A-Thon at 1600 Kentucky Street in Bellingham to raise funds for Asayo's Wish Children's Village in the Kaberamaido District of Uganda. Two hundred students between the ages of three and forty have asked sponsors to donate per kick. Students will complete 1000 kicks in less than two hours.

The goal is to help ease the desperate situation in Uganda, where UNAIDS reports only 1300 of the estimated 2 million orphans are living in an orphanage. Every penny of donations raised by the Kick-A-Thon will be used by Asayo's Wish Foundation (http://www.asayoswish.com) to create a sustainable Children's Village, which will provide food, shelter, education and medical attention to over 400 orphans.

The students at PNWKC have learned why they are raising funds by participating in a curriculum designed to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and related issues such as poverty and gender inequality in Africa. On learning that the average Ugandan lives on less than $1 a day, one karate student commented, "We're mad because a gallon of gas costs what one person lives on for four days. You look at things different once you hear that. You kind of feel like you have to help."

Shayne Simpson, the owner of PNWKC, believes that teaching the students to help others empowers the student. The fundraising forms remind students and sponsors that in participating, "There is a risk! Generosity and compassion can be addictive! Wonderful feelings may invade your life! A warm glow could surround you!"
