Taking Eclipse a step closer to ubiquitousness. Genuitec, LLC, a founding member of the Eclipse Foundation, announced today the general availability of Pulse 2.1.

Genuitec, LLC, a founding member of the Eclipse Foundation, announced today the general availability of Pulse 2.1. Pulse 2.1 is an easy way to obtain, manage and configure your Eclipse-based products, and it offers users extensive feature and usability enhancements over previous versions.

Notably, a new ability for Pulse 2.1 provides a share link that enables users to share their profiles with the public in the form of an icon. This means that developers can easily share their tool stacks with their friends and colleagues on their personal website or blog.

Also new to Pulse with this release is the customer-requested "Desktop Express" service. This new option allows ISVs to deliver software to their customers using Pulse. Not only will companies be able to improve their customers' installation experiences, but they can also add value to their tools by allowing users to manage their entire tool stack.

"We are really excited about Pulse 2.1," said Todd Williams, vice president of technology for Genuitec. "With some of these usability enhancements, Pulse is versatile enough to suit the needs of a single programmer, a team, an entire company's developers or even showcase third-party products in the form of an ISV delivery mechanism."

Other notable enhancements for Pulse 2.1 include:

  • Managing of profiles from within Eclipse - no need to open the Pulse Explorer
  • Multiple OS support - Mac and Linux both available in addition to Windows
  • Automatic Proxy Detection & General Proxy Improvements
  • Improved Workspace Collaboration - control which settings are shared

Pulse 2.1 additionally improves the functionality and scope of the lauded Pulse "Freelance" value-added service. Freelance allows users to contribute any items to their profiles that are not currently listed in the Pulse catalog and share those profiles with other Pulse Freelance users effortlessly. Freelance also provides users the ability to combine workspace and preference settings in their profiles, giving consumers maximum portability and sharing capabilities.

"Pulse has come a long way since its inception," said Tim Webb, project manager for Pulse. "We're happy to be able to provide Pulse consumers with such a versatile product that allows them to choose the best usage scenario based on their needs."
