For Suna Ruhren, the fair-skinned owner and designer of Hummingbaby, gauze fabric is the very definition of her childhood spent on the Japanese peninsula of Chiba--irritated sunburned skin soothed by gauze dresses. So it only made sense that her children's clothing boutique spotlight the fabric renowned for its extraordinary softness against delicate skin. Daydream, her Spring 2009 line for Hummingbaby, features 100% fine double gauze fabrics, clean prints, and well-placed details.
So gentle that it is used to dress wounds, make cloth diapers, and treat burn victims, gauze is a lightweight and breathable fabric ideal for delicate (and sunburned!) skin. But it's not just the gauze fabric that recalls Ruhren's youth, the non-cloying prints--conjuring up children's daydreams--pastel palette, and vintage inspired cuts pay homage as well.
"I try to find the prints that remind me of my imaginary world when I was little girl. Prints that evoke nostalgia with a touch of melancholy. They are not too cute but they make my heart ache. Sort of like a sentimental yearning for the happy lost time," Ruhren explains of her fabric selection process.
With ten styles, and 3 or more pastel colorways each, the line presently consists of: five dresses, one bolero to complement the dresses, a shirt, a bloomer, a pair of booties, and one romper. Playing off the fantasy-like quality of the gauze's subtle shimmer, the repeating prints--tiny dolphins trailed by bubbles, hand drawn kittens, freesia in the breeze, to name a few--are complemented by streamlined embellishments, such as: delicate lace trims, a glossy braid and colorful thin satin tied in a floppy bow.
Ranging in price from $28 to $74, the garments, available in sizes newborn to 18 months, are carefully crafted and designed in NY, with the help of small-scale seamstresses. Debuting at the Bubble children's apparel tradeshow on August 3rd, 4th and 5th 2008 in NY, the Hummingbaby 100% fine double gauze Daydream collection will be available through select retailers nationwide in Spring 2009 as well as online at http://www.hummingbaby.com.
Named after the Hummingbird, who virtually stops time to savor the sweetest things life has to offer, Hummingbaby is a clothing line that evokes the fanciful imaginations of childhood through the use of fine gauze fabrics and nostalgic prints. Their 100% double gauze Spring 2009 line, Daydream, reads as a love letter to the youth of yesteryear. With delicate prints and refined embellishments, these breathable dresses and clothes shimmer with childhood's imaginary delights. For cooler weather, Hummingbaby is working on collections that feature four or more layers of gauze.
