A Westin flag has been confirmed at the Downtown Norfolk Hotel and Conference Center and all agreements with the Norfolk Hotel Alliance LLC and the City of Norfolk have been solidified.

As the leader of the upper-upscale brand segment for hotels and resorts, The Westin will raise the bar of lodging choices in Downtown.

Mayor Paul D. Fraim and Malay Thakkar of the Norfolk Hotel Alliance LLC, announced today that a Westin flag has been confirmed at the Downtown Norfolk Hotel and Conference Center and all agreements with the Norfolk Hotel Alliance LLC and the City of Norfolk have been solidified. "We are delighted to be able to confirm the Starwood brand for this significant investment and future icon for the City of Norfolk," said Mayor Fraim.

Malay Thakkar, speaking on behalf of the Norfolk Hotel Alliance LLC, a partnership between LTD Management, Robinson Development Group, and Fulco Development, Inc. said, "As the leader of the upper-upscale brand segment for hotels and resorts, The Westin will raise the bar of lodging choices in Downtown."

Over the past several months, the Norfolk Hotel Alliance LLC has worked diligently to redesign the massing of the building to enhance and expand the project in guest room counts, meeting and public spaces. "We are excited to have the opportunity to bring to Norfolk a style that is architecturally inspiring and thoughtfully designed," added Malay Thakkar, Managing Partner of LTD.

Slated to open in 2011, the 23-story Norfolk Westin and Conference Center will have 301 guest rooms featuring 12 luxury suites on ten floors. The 50,000 square foot conference center will have a 21,000 square foot Grand Ballroom, a 4,000 square foot "state-of-the-art" media meeting room, as well as three floors of meeting and ballroom space. Ample parking will be provided with over 600 spaces connected to the hotel. The top six floors of the hotel tower will be private residential condominiums that have been pre-sold. The hotel will have two restaurants, a full service hotel restaurant and a ground floor restaurant, which will be leased to a national upscale concept.

The architectural massing design of this project has been completed by Costas Kondylis & Partners LLP and the detailed construction planning has begun with the architect of record, Jonathan Nehmer & Associates. Development of a set of 100% construction drawings will be completed in late winter.

"The completion of this important phase will allow us to move forward with the construction timeline," confirmed Rod Woolard, Director of Development for the City of Norfolk. "The opening of The Westin Hotel and Conference Center will be after the large-scale Light Rail and Wachovia Center Downtown projects are scheduled to be completed. Collectively, our new urban transit-oriented environment will further entice the visitors and business travelers to Norfolk."

The Westin will begin booking conferences this summer. "Most conferences are sold 2-3 years in advance so we're on schedule for a spring 2011 opening," said Kimberly Schlick, Vice President of Marketing for LTD Management. A Westin marketing sales office on Main Street is planned to open in early fall. LTD Management and the Norfolk Convention and Visitors Bureau will cooperatively represent The Westin Hotel to meeting planners. "This will provide meeting planners and potential clients a place to come for a sensory experience that is unlike any other. Every effort will be made to inspire the public on what this project will become," said Kimberly Schlick.

Mayor Fraim said that he's confident the new Westin Hotel and Conference Center will allow the city to become more competitive in its efforts to attract the lucrative executive conference business.

"There's no question that Norfolk has lost some groups because of our limited meeting space," Fraim said. "The new hotel and conference center will give the city's convention and visitor's bureau the necessary resources to attract larger groups." Coupled with The Westin and two other hotels currently under construction on Brambleton Avenue, Downtown Norfolk will have a total of 2,000 hotel rooms and 5,000 rooms throughout the city. The new Westin Hotel and Conference Center will be the centerpiece of a new and aggressive campaign to promote the city as a conference destination.

The Norfolk Westin Hotel and Conference Center will both supplement and complement Downtown. Centrally located on Granby & Main Streets, The Westin is certain to become a dominant icon in the City's downtown skyline.
