Leading Actresses Shed Light on Leading Cause of Death

Renowned actresses, Kim Coles, Jacque Reid, and creator Sharon K. McGhee, take a leading role to shed light on one of the leading causes of death among African-American women ages 25-34 in a dynamic stage performance in New York City. Two performances on June 28, 2008 at the Helen Mills Theatre.

McGhee deliver provocative performances, and shine the spotlight on the AIDS epidemic and its affect on African-American women. The Pocketbook Monologues, written by McGhee, is a stirring collection of stories launched to generate awareness and increase understanding of the health crisis that is taking the lives of thousands of mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, friends and mentors in communities throughout the United States.

According to statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 64% of women living with HIV/AIDS are African-American. While HIV/AIDS threatens to take the lives of these women, The Pocketbook Monologues has found an inspiring, and uplifting way to give them a voice and a national platform. Their stories are shared by an award-winning cast, that skillfully and gracefully engages the audience in a dialog about sexuality, intimacy and responsibility. This incredible performance will bring audiences to their feet, but more importantly, encourage them to continue the dialog in their own homes and community.

This year The Pocketbook Monologues celebrates the second anniversary of its New York City premiere with two special performances on July 28, 2008 at the Helen Mills Theatre. Dr. Miriam Burnett, NYC native and President of R.A.P.H.A., is the designated charitable partner for their HIV/Awareness initiatives. In celebration of this historic event, a special guest will be honored in an inaugural ceremony following the performance. Nationally acclaimed speaker, and founder of the Magnificent Women Organization, Cheryl Scales, will present the award.
