Sunnect, Inc. ( today announced that its new AP501 Advanced Protection digital door lock is showcased in the Smart Home: Green + Wired Exhibit Resource Center at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago ( The Smart Home features green construction and furnishings as well as the latest home technologies.

WIRED Magazine (, who evaluated the AP501 for the exhibit, described the AP501 digital door lock as "designed to provide the highest level of security for your home."

"In my 30 years in the locksmith business, I have seen quite a few residential door locks and the Sunnect AP501 is by far the very best," said Ken Berkley, who manages 20 service centers at Baldino's Lock and Key. "I installed the very first AP501 we got at my own home and my family absolutely loves it! It's so well-made we can't find a fault in this lock."

Convenient Features

The Sunnect AP501 takes full advantage of the latest digital door lock technology:

  •     Digital Keys - Protects against lock-picking and keyhole-vandalism since the keys are digital and cannot be copied, and there is no keyhole to pick;
  •     Keyless Entry using a Passcode - Prevents getting locked out of your own home and you don't even have to carry a key;
  •     Auto Lock - Locks the door automatically when it is closed;
  •     Key Deletion - Disables lost or stolen keys; and
  •     Intruder Alarm - Discourages potential intruders.

"Anyone who comes in contact with the AP501 will immediately appreciate its beautiful style and rock-solid construction. You get a sense of security and durability," said Alex Huynh, principal at Cydus LLC who coordinated the AP501 display at the Smart Home exhibit. "Sunnect's attention to detail is meticulous. For instance, you can enter extraneous random digits before entering your real passcode if someone might be watching you."

Physical Toughness

Extraordinary toughness sets the AP501 apart from the others. The AP501 was tested at -35° F and the lock contains a bypass circuitry to withstand high-voltage attacks, up to 30,000 volts. Its motor and deadbolt latch were cycle-tested to 200,000 cycles. (If you open the door 10 times a day, it would take more than 50 years to reach 200,000 cycles.)

Additionally, the AP501 has specific features to defend against physical attacks such as kicking, prying, hammering, and even sawing. For example, the throwbolt has a carbon rod embedded in its core to withstand sawing attempts. Another example is the 2.5-mm thick metal mounting plate and the mounting bracket that keep intruders from gaining access even if they somehow manage to physically break the exterior lock off the door.

Calling the AP501 "tank tough," Dennis O'Donnell, vice president of, a Sunnect-authorized distributor who has been marketing digital door locks since 2004, said "the AP501 is the best digital door lock available today. Our partners, customers, and reviewers have all given a big thumbs-up for the AP501. The tank-tough construction is simply unforgettable."
